The late pick four Saturday at Belmont is an appealing sequence with real potential for a good payoff. And while three or these four races are scheduled for turf, local weather forecasters are saying as of midday Friday that the heavy rain might not hit the area until Saturday night, which is good news. I’m playing this pick four, and here are my thoughts on it.
Race 7
How will I play Belmont on Saturday? With extreme caution.
Despite a full field in the feature, the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, and a couple of other interesting races, I had tons of trouble coming up with strong opinions. Instead, I’ll attempt to make lemonade from lemons by keying the following horses in multiple-race wagers and playing them to win if they meet my personal value-line requirements:
One of our two Pix last week scored, sort of, when our juvenile gimmick play, Cinnamon J P, led wire-to-wire at Lone Star and posted $25—while the coupled entry we favored was off the board. In truth, BreezeFigs juveniles that run in cheap maiden claimers often have advantages even if they are not necessarily “up to Par” because many of them have been training longer and harder than other starters in the same races, so always consider them. The 3-year-old pick at Canterbury was desultory in a fourth place finish.
Closing Saturday of the Santa Anita Spring/Summer meet is highlighted by the Grade 1 Gold Cup, but it also features three other graded stakes. I will focus on the pick three sequence which consists of the Grade 1 Triple Bend, the Grade 2 Royal Heroine, and the Grade 1 Gold Cup.

Big-event cards can be found Saturday at Santa Anita, Churchill Downs, and Prairie Meadows. At Santa Anita, the Grade 1, $500,000 Gold Cup and the Grade 1, $300,000 Triple Bend head a program that includes two other graded stakes. The closing-night card at Churchill also has four stakes, led by the Grade 2, $200,000 Firecracker. And there are three graded stakes Saturday night at Prairie Meadows, topped by the Grade 3, $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap.
At Belmont Park, the feature is the Grade 1, $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes.
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens saddles Star Grazing (#6, ML 4-1) in Thursday’s third race at Belmont Park, a one-mile allowance. Since Jan., 1, 2014, Jerkens is winning at a 30 percent clip in allowances, for a return on investment of $3.27.
