NEW KING
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Dec. 26, 2nd
Finish: 4th by 2
Beyer: 81
Debut colt broke well, not quick, dropped back on turn while appearing green, angled out, and ran on late. Into Mischief colt wants longer than six furlongs, maiden 3-year-old for 2024.
The prospect of rain forcing turf races onto dirt Saturday at Santa Anita takes at least one appealing race out of Weekend GamePlan consideration, while a paucity of positive vibes in two stakes at Laurel and simply a paucity of entrants in the Gravesend at Aqueduct eliminates those three stakes. That leaves us at Gulfstream, which has several playable fields, and Oaklawn, where a touch of value might be unearthed in their feature.

RACE 6: SUBSANADOR (#5), a Group 1 winner in his native Argentina, makes his North American debut off a late-July layoff, but he sure looked good in some of his recent workouts, has won his last four races on dirt, and seems well-spotted in the San Antonio. SALESMAN (#2) had an easy front-running trip when dominating them going 13 furlongs over Breeders’ Cup weekend. That trip likely isn’t available to him Tuesday, but he has improved since switched to dirt. NEWGRANGE (4) is a consistent performer capable of working out a nice trip just off the early leader(s). (3)
RACE 6: EMBOITE has some of the better Beyers in the field, and he also has the tactical speed to work out a favorable trip regardless of how the race flow develops. ARUBA is more reliant on pace, as he's more of a stone closer at this stage, but if he gets honest fractions he may be good enough. OPPOSITES ATTRACT was off the board when last on the turf two back, but he was beaten less than two lengths there despite running against a speed-friendly race flow. (3)
With handicapping completed before the publication of morning lines, it was with chagrin I discovered two plays in full-field turf routes at Gulfstream Park were program favorites. So much for contrarian thinking. Favoritism does not, however, preclude value, and maybe we can dredge some up.
Tropical Park Derby
Ohana Honor looked like a good bet in the Commonwealth Stakes last month – until Churchill Downs had to move the race from its problematic turf course onto dirt and Ohana Honor was scratched.
