Gierkink: How I'll play Gulfstream on Sunday, March 5

The early pick five looks getable without spending a small fortune.

SEUSS (1), first time off the Mike Maker claim with Jose Ortiz aboard, and a sharp STAR CONTENDER (5) are the obvious protagonists in the opener.

INTO THE FUTURE (3) should prove tough to catch in the second if longshot Khamsa Tfu doesn’t go with him early. A speed duel could set the table for a dropping HY DANDY (1), who’s had numerous chances against $12,500 N2L company.

King: Gulfstream Park pick four for Saturday, March 4

Focused around a single in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf, the speedy Heart to Heart, here is my strategy for the late pick four at Gulfstream on Saturday – a sequence that includes three other graded races, capped by the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.

Race 10, Davona Dale

Although this one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies drew a full field of 14, I view three horses as standing above the rest: Miss Sky Warrior (7), Eloquent Riddle (9), and Pretty City Dancer (12).

Race 3:

Highway Star (#3)

Ran well to win the Go for Wand two back over a couple of next-out stakes winners.

Was wide against a pronounced rail bias last time, costing her any chance of being competitive.

The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting she will be racing close to the pace in a situation favoring horses on or near the lead.

5-1 on ML

 Race 7:

Big Louie D (#4)

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, March 4, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

This time we got it right as our key, Crawford, came on again in the stretch to beat our second key, Visionary Tale, with one of our gimmick plays, The Red Dude, coming up to complete a BreezeFigs exacta-trifecta in last week’s Pick. Granted, the payoffs weren’t all that big, but it was nice to see the wealth spread around.

Hammersly: How I'll play Santa Anita for Saturday, March 4

With finally a break in the weather, there is good footing and there are full fields for Saturday’s card at Santa Anita, providing a number of options for play. A competitive hillside turf race, an inscrutable group of maidens, and well-matched bunch of optional claiming fillies and mares gives the late pick three some appeal.

Race 1

Polar Jet (#2)

Charlton Baker gets a 99 Trainer Rating first off the claim.

Was slow into stride after breaking slowly in his debut, but was running on at the end.

He is coming out of an unusually tough maiden claiming race (note the 94 Race Rating).

7-2 on ML

King: If you can get 2-1 odds on Coasted, grab it

War Story is a viable alternative if you want to try and beat the favorite in the Fred Hooper.

Although the most prestigious races on Saturday’s Fountain of Youth card at Gulfstream Park come late in the day, some of the earlier stakes hold interest to this horseplayer, notably the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride (race 4) and the Grade 3 Fred Hooper (race 5).
