With a ho-hum first half of the card Saturday at Gulfstream, the most appealing wager of the day is the late pick four, particularly since I have a 4-1 price horse to single in the featured Skip Away Stakes in Fear the Cowboy.
Race 10, maiden special weight
The featured event on Saturday’s Santa Anita program is the nightcap, the Grade 2 San Luis Rey. I’m planning on keying in on two separate double sequences – one linking races 4 and 5, and the other races 8 and 9.
RACE 4
ARCADIA, Calif. - The single-ticket jackpot carryover has swelled to $386,039 for Saturday’s program at Santa Anita.
There were multiple winning tickets in Friday's $2 pick six, which paid $16,193. Consolation tickets with five winners were worth $67.80.
The single-ticket pool has not been hit in 17 racing days, since Feb. 20. The single-ticket portion of the pool will be paid out only if there is one winning ticket in the pick six on Saturday.
The Gulfstream championship meet is winding down, and Sunday’s early pick five is made up mostly of low-level claimers who have some appeal.
The red-hot apprentice Nicky Figueroa loves the lead. He could take the opener with the front-runner CUNAVICHE (2), who just missed winning another bottom-level race for non-winners of three sprinting on dirt March 3. There are two wild cards in the field, CANDY JAM (4) and JE NE SAIS PAS (5), who are both dropping from $16,000 NW3 turf tilts. They will be included on my modest ticket.
Race 6:
Marble Falls (#1)
The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting he'll be contesting the pace in a situation favoring the front-runners.
Gets a positive trainer switch to Ed Barker.
Trainer Ed Barker gets a 93 Trainer Rating when pairing with Irad Ortiz.
5-1 on ML

Mea culpa time: A sorting error in our internal program (not DRF’s) somehow misplaced a horse in our Pick race last week—and he won. That was Classic Cotton, who would have probably been a gimmick Pick; our hot Pick, Tolstoy, is still looking to start a revolution.
ARCADIA, Calif. – The single-ticket pick six jackpot carryover at Santa Anita has grown to $368,689.71 for Friday's card. There were 27 perfect tickets Thursday, paying $3,879.80. The consolation payoff, for tickets with five winners, was $46.40.
There was $196,086 wagered on Thursday’s pick six, a relatively large pool considering the absence of a traditional carryover. The Thursday pool one week ago, on March 16, was $165,616.
