BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, May 13, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Our first 2-year-old Pick of the season got fried in a duel on the head end—a common occurrence in baby races—but the only other juvenile starter, R Paper Chase, a Group 1 from OBSMAR, broke her maiden in her debut at Gulfstream at a generous (not!) $2.60.

Santa Anita: Friday features pair of pick six carryovers

ARCADIA, Calif. - There are two pick six carryovers for Friday’s program at Santa Anita - $38,700 in the main pool and $73,257 in the single-ticket jackpot pool.

The jackpot portion was last hit on May 4.

The winners of Thursday’s pick six races were Blanket of Ice ($23.40), Social Taboo ($2.80), K Thirty Eight ($17.60), Back Beauty ($5.60), Jimmy Bouncer ($8.60), and Poster Girl ($12.80).

Social Taboo was the only winning favorite. Back Beauty was the second choice. Consolation tickets with five winners were worth $307.

Watchmaker: How I'll play Belmont for Saturday, May 13

Saturday’s 11-race card at Belmont Park, which includes four graded stakes, is one you simply cannot plan ahead for in terms of wagering strategy.

The weather forecast for the New York area Saturday is not pretty. Rain is supposed to start sometime in the morning (one weather service at this writing says it will begin even before dawn) and could quickly turn heavy. The National Weather Service says the chance of rain Saturday is 90 percent and the area could receive around an inch of rain during daylight hours.

Race 5:

Zealous Scholar (#2)
Is the only horse in the field to have earned triple-digit TimeformUS Speed Figures, and has done so in 3 of her 4 starts.
The Pace Projector is predicting she will be in front early in a situation favoring the leader.
Probably doesn't want to go this far, but Manny Franco can ration out her speed.

King: Hootenanny, Timeline two favorites to avoid

Coady Photography
Ghost Hunter, winner of the Presque Isle Mile, has a good shot to win the Hanshin Cup at Arlington.

Two of my three column wagering plays for Saturday are on value horses matched against perceived overbet favorites with reputations.

One such favorite, Hootenanny in the Grade 3 Hanshin Cup at Arlington, is, at least in my view, a has-been, while the other, Timeline, is an undefeated colt in the Peter Pan at Belmont who is likely to be bet like he could be the next major challenger to Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.

Race 2

Passing Moments (#1)

Made a premature move from last to first around the far turn before flattening out in her debut.

Is bred to improve on turf, since she's a half-sister to five turf winners.

Gets a positive rider switch to Javier Castellano.
