McGee: How I'll play Del Mar on Sunday, Aug. 6

Mike Machowsky is going to win the Graduation Stakes on Sunday at Del Mar, isn’t he? The perennially underrated trainer has three entries, all viable contenders, in a wide-open edition of the 2-year-old fixture, and we’ll bank on him finding the winner’s circle with one of them when slanting a pick-five ticket (total cost: $60) in his favor.

Fornatale: How I'll play Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 5

It’s Whitney Stakes Day at Saratoga, and while it’s raining right now, things are expected to clear up by first post. We should have a cracking day of racing accompanied by mild weather. As for how I’m playing today, the plan is to sit chilly for the first part of the card and dig in when the stakes action begins in race 7 with the Lure and continue on through the Whitney itself.

Free: How I'll play Del Mar on Saturday, Aug. 5

DEL MAR, Calif. – Are you betting Del Mar on Saturday? Of course you are.

But take heed – the main track changed on Friday. Several winners rallied three and four wide. That rarely happens here. The majority of dirt races at this meet have been won by horses who saved ground on the turn and into the lane.
