Bernier: How I'd play Del Mar for Saturday, Sept. 2

Two-year-old fillies take center stage Saturday at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, as the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante will be contested at seven furlongs on the main track. The co-featured event Saturday is the Grade 2 John C. Mabee for fillies and mares on the turf, carded as race 8. It may ultimately prove a chalky sequence, but I’m interested in playing pick threes that begin in the Debutante and conclude in the Mabee.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, September 2, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Interesting developments in last week’s Pix. The 2-year-old, Hazit, was left as the only BreezeFigs colt in the race after the other two scratched, and he hammered the field at a most generous $8.60. On the other hand, the 3-year-olds were a mess as firster Changer ran modestly and the million dollar baby Inca Chief was nowhere to be found.

Hammersly: Saratoga pick five for Saturday, Sept. 2

It’s tough to go too nuts over Saturday’s late pick five at Saratoga since a few of the legs figure to be dominated by heavy favorites, namely Gun Runner in the Grade 1 Woodward. Still, a couple legs offer some opportunity to make the wager pay.

TimeformUS Saratoga Horses in Focus for Aug. 31, 2017

Race 3:
Minsky Moment (#3)

Ran an impressive speed figure three back, in an effort that would probably beat this field.

Ran better than it appears in his last start, since he got a wide trip over a rail-biased surface.

Possesses the tactical speed to lay close to likely pacesetter Control Group early.

8-5 on ML

Race 6:
Royal Asset (#3)

The Pace Projector is predicting that he will be the early pacesetter in a situation that is expected to favor the front-runner.
