NEW YORK – Santa Anita has the Grade 1 race Saturday with the $400,000 Santa Margarita, but Oaklawn has the big money with the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel Stakes, which is supported by the Grade 2, $350,000 Azeri, and the $300,000 Essex Handicap. The Rebel is a Kentucky Derby qualifying event worth a total of 85 points, but it’s not the only such race Saturday. There is also the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks Stakes (no, I’m not kidding!) at Turfway Park, which offers a total of 34 Derby points.
One other Grade 2 stakes Saturday is the $200,000 Inside Information at Gulfstream.

Four-wide start to finish in turf mile, this N2L claiming mare ran super. She actually made the lead in the stretch, but ground loss was too much to overcome. Sharp effort.
The mutuel field again was a lukewarm favorite when Pool 3 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern, while the field also was the slight choice in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which closed 30 minutes later.
The field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed at 4-1 in Derby Pool 3, while Justify was pounded down from 10-1 to 6-1 after winning his second start Sunday in a Santa Anita allowance to become the lowest individually priced horse. Then came Bolt d’Oro (7-1) McKinzie (9-1), Good Magic (11-1), Audible (13-1), and Solomini (17-1).

There is so much to say about Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita that it’s difficult to know where to begin. So, let’s begin at the end, with the controversial decision by the stewards to disqualify McKinzie and award the win to Bolt d’Oro.
