McGee: Del Mar pick three play for Saturday, July 21

With races 1 and 5 being just too difficult for me to decipher – which precludes taking a shot at either the early pick five (R1-5) or early pick four (R2-5) – I’ll be trying to leverage a strong opinion on one of those races when mapping out a pick three play. Here’s the strategy:

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix, Saturday, July 21, 2018 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Last week’s Pick was a wash-out: all of the ones we liked were scratched. Still, it was a good week for both BreezeFigs cards—seven 2-year-old maidens and five 3-year-old maidens won. The juveniles won at Arlington, Gulfstream, Indiana, Monmouth (two), Thistledown and Woodbine—and two others won stakes at Evangeline and Belmont, with a BreezeFigs horse finish third in each of those races. The 3-year-olds won at Belmont (two), Ellis (BreezeFigs exacta), Indiana and Los Alamitos.

Weekend Warrior for Saturday, July 21: Picks for Diana Stakes, Sanford Stakes, San Clemente Stakes

Ronnie Betor
A Raving Beauty earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure with this triumph in the Just A Game Stakes on June 9.

This is the first Saturday of the marquee summer meets at Saratoga and Del Mar and, not surprisingly, that’s where the big stakes action will be found. Saratoga’s feature is the Grade 1, $500,000 Diana, supported by the Grade 3, $150,000 Sanford. Del Mar’s co-features, two Grade 2, $200,000 events, are the San Diego Handicap and the San Clemente Stakes.

Race 3:
Comeoncomeoncat (#3)

The Pace Projector is predicting a situation favoring horses on or near the lead, and he is expected to be the front-runner.
Ran deceptively well at Parx last time after setting a blistering early pace.
Has significantly improved in recent starts and is one of the few runners in this field who still has some upside.

Gierkink: Woodbine horses to watch for week of July 16, 2018

IN A TWIST
Trainer: Ashlee Brnjas
Last race: July 13, 5th
Finish: 2nd by 2 3/4
Beyer: 59
He ran into a jackpot in midstretch when in the midst of his rally on debut, and may have given the winner a run for his money had he had clear sailing in the $20,000 maiden sprint.

Race 4:
Handle With Care (#6)

Finds himself in an unusually soft spot for a race at this level.
Should appreciate the switch to turf since his dam was a four-time turf winner and Tapizar is a decent turf influence.
Could be the controlling speed in this race given the lack of pace among the others.
15-1 on ML
