VINTNER
Trainer: Moises Yanez
Last race: Jan. 11, 6th
Finish: 3rd by 4
Beyer: 50
Came running a bit late while clearly no threat to the top four in this maiden claimer on the turf, a better effort than the running line may indicate. May be able to catch up with the right group at the $16,000 level given a clean trip and favorable setup.
DON'T FIGHT
Trainer: Tom Proctor
MIDNIGHT CRY
Trainer: Claudio Gonzalez
Last race: Jan. 12, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2 lengths
Beyer: 62
Showed good speed in first start following 273-day layoff and dug in gamely when confronted by the sharp favorite in the stretch. Claimed by top barn and is a nice fit back in the $5,000 beaten ranks.
FRISKY WHISKEY
Trainer: Eli Betancourt, Jr.
Last race: Jan. 11, 4th
MANHATTAN UP
Trainer: Phil Oviedo
Last race: Jan. 10, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 3/4
Beyer: 96
First start in five months, comeback sprinter ran super in second-level allowance won by the pacesetter favorite. Manhattan Up raced inside, waited for room, finished willingly.
BELLA VITA
Trainer: Simon Callaghan
Last race: Jan. 10, 8th
Finish: Second by nose
NUESTRA UNION
Trainer: Eduardo Caramori
Last race: Jan. 4, 2nd
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 48
4-year-old maiden returned from a 10-week layoff with a persistent effort to suggest she’ll be very tough if entered back for anything similar to the maiden-$30,000 tag for which she competed earlier this month for Caramori, the Brazil native who often flies under the radar during the winter months.
Graded stakes winners on Saturday at Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park came from everywhere, and none was more impressive than an unbeaten Group 1 winner from Brazil who scored a smashing victory in her U.S. debut.
Jolie Olimpica was well publicized coming into the Grade 3 Las Cienegas, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race won previously by Mizdirection and Heat Haze at 6 1/2 furlongs. Is it too soon to compare Jolie Olimpica to those horses? Not after what she did Saturday at Santa Anita.

I respect both of the favorites in this race. Collegeville Girl (#2) would be pretty tough for this field to handle if she runs back to her victory at Belmont on Oct. 25, but she was surprisingly dull when she returned at Aqueduct last time, so there are definitely some concerns about her reliability.
