Kentucky Derby 2021: Mike Beer's picks and analysis

KING FURY may be a bit behind the eight ball with just one start as a 3-year-old, even with that race being a career-best effort. The silver lining for this well-bred son of Curlin lies in that he had a solid foundation last year with five juvenile starts, including a stakes win over Churchill Downs dirt, leaving him open to further improvement now that he has had a race.

Kentucky Derby 2021 clocker: Hot Rod Charlie shows he's one to reckon with

Barbara D. Livingston
Hot Rod Charlie gallops on Wednesday at Churchill Downs, even throwing in a “mini-blowout.”

CHURCHILL DOWNS
Weather: Sunny
Temp: 71
Track: Fast

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Wednesday morning was the calm before the storm, literally, at Churchill Downs, with intermittent rain expected to move into the local area later in the afternoon and linger through the night before getting even heavier on Thursday.

The forecast raises the possibility that this morning could well have been the last time the 20 Kentucky Derby hopefuls will have an opportunity to train over a fast track before the main event.

CHURCHILL DOWNS
Weather: Cloudy
Track: Fast
Temp: 52

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Those trainers who decided to roll the dice and stick with the original plan to work their Kentucky Derby and Oaks prospects on Saturday at Churchill Downs, even in the wake of a gloomy forecast, were rewarded with a fast track throughout the morning as the inevitable showers did not arrive until a couple of hours after training ended.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, April 24, 2021 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Our key last week, Road to Success, almost lived up to his name with a gutsy stalking performance that earned him the exacta with the favorite and the trifecta with the second choice, all at generous odds. During the week six BreezeFigs 3-year-olds broke their maidens at Aqueduct (two), Keeneland (two), Penn National  and Santa Anita (BreezeFigs exacta). In addition the huge OBSAPR sale concluded in Ocala and those babies will be getting to the gates soon, so keep a look out for them.
