BreezeFigs Quick-Pix Saturday, May 8, 2021 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Other than the fact that we probably need to upgrade our eyeglasses after identifying the horses in our Pick last week as colts, we had a heck of a Saturday when the fillies Quick Conversation and Crowding Out came home late to complete an exacta and trifecta—a couple of hours before Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby.

The $1 Belmont Park pick six on races 6-11 Saturday includes four of the five stakes on the card. The Grade 3, $150,000 Runhappy is race 4 but the pick six begins with the Grade 3, $150,000 Beaugay and continues with the Grade 3, $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap (race 7), the Grade 3 $200,000 Peter Pan (race 9), and the Grade 1, $700,000 Man o’ War (race 10).

The pick six also includes a pair of maiden races for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the turf (races 8 and 11).

There is a pick-six carryover of $41,572 into the Saturday card.

Weekend GamePlan for May 8, 2020: Picks for Man o' War, Peter Pan, Santa Barbara

Coady Photography
Field Pass is proven at 1 1/8 miles and may appreciate the stretch-out to 1 3/8 miles in the Man o' War.

It’s comeback day at Belmont.

Harvey’s Lil Goil, who closed out a bi-surface 3-year-old campaign with an excellent Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare turf third last fall, returns in the Grade 3 Beaugay. So does Civil Union, fifth in the Filly and Mare Turf, and Irish import Lemista, who bears the colors of Peter Brant and starts for trainer Chad Brown, potent circumstances for sure.

Those are all very nice horses, but the Grade 1 Man o’ War boasts a stronger field as the best race on a quiet Saturday of American racing, the exhalation after the Derby and before the Preakness.

Stretch-out maiden got banged around at start, stirred up and sped to lead unrelaxed, hounded by rival, faded. Race was a toss. Follow in Cal-bred maiden route, turf or dirt.

Sunday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Water White still has upside as she steps up in Ruffian

Belmont | Race 8 | Post Time 4:40 p.m. (ET) | Go to the TimeformUS PPs | Not already a TimeformUS member? Sign up

I don’t have any major knocks against the favorites in this Ruffian, other than the fact that they’re going to be short prices in a race that I think is fairly competitive.

Kentucky Derby 2021 post-race analysis

Debra A. Roma
Ridden by John Velazquez, Medina Spirit (right) outfinishes Mandaloun (center) and Hot Rod Charlie to win the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Once again the Red Sea parted. ROCK YOUR WORLD got crushed at the start. MIDNIGHT BOURBON wasn’t sent, despite intimations he would. Once again the trainer in North American racing who best understands how to use speed as a weapon, and how to train to win the Kentucky Derby – not to merely participate in the Derby – won America’s biggest race, using tactics that were a carbon copy of what happened last time this race was run, eight months ago.
