Drosselmeyer will get back to 1 1/2 miles in Friday's Grade 2, $150,000 Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Like all horses when they are 3, Drosselmeyer only got one chance to run in the Belmont Stakes, and he made the most of it. But one year later, he still has the opportunity to run 1 1/2 miles at Belmont Park, and trainer Bill Mott has seized the moment.

Drosselmeyer, back at his favorite track and at a distance at which he is certainly proven, heads the field Friday in the Grade 2, $150,000 Brooklyn Handicap, a race for older horses that serves as a dress rehearsal for riders, and television crews, who will be back Saturday for the Belmont Stakes.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The hurdles for Drosselmeyer in his return were not insignificant. He hadn’t raced in nine months since winning the Belmont Stakes, was running over a Tampa Bay Downs strip that can be a bit quirky to those who don’t train there, and was competing at a distance that was probably short of his best.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 Belmont Stakes, will make his long awaited 4-year-old debut here at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday as the overwhelming favorite of a field of 11 older handicap runners in the $60,000 Challenger Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

Drosselmeyer will not race in Dubai World Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Drosselmeyer has been ruled out of this year's Dubai World Cup, trainer Bill Mott said Monday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Bill Mott confirmed Monday that 2010 Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer would not run in this year’s $10 million Dubai World Cup as originally planned.

Drosselmeyer, who worked a half-mile in 50 seconds at Payson Park on Monday, missed six days of training after contracting a mild temperature earlier this month, forcing Mott to scratch his horse out of the Mineshaft at Fair Grounds on Feb. 12.

Drosselmeyer resumes training following illness

Barbara D. Livingston
Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer has recovered from a virus and is still under consideration for next month's Dubai World Cup.

Trainer Bill Mott reports that 2010 Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer is back at the track after missing nearly a week’s training and a prospective start in last weekend’s Mineshaft at Fair Grounds after contracting a virus earlier this month.

Drosselmeyer has not started since beating Fly Down by three-quarters of a length in the Belmont. He started five times at 3. Drosselmeyer was also second in the Grade 2 Dwyer and third in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Mott had hoped to use the Mineshaft as a springboard to next month’s Dubai World Cup.

Drosselmeyer headed to Mineshaft, maybe World Cup

Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 Belmont Stakes in his most recent race, is scheduled to make his first start since the last leg of the Triple Crown in the Feb. 19 Mineshaft Handicap at Fair Grounds, trainer Bill Mott confirmed Tuesday morning. If Drosselmeyer performs to expectations there, he will move on to contest the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 26.

Mott said the Mineshaft offers a good opportunity to shake the rust off Drosselmeyer, who will be making his first start after an 8 1/2-month break.
