Twinspires given California license deadline

Twinspires.com, the largest account-wagering operation in the U.S., will have its license to do business in California revoked on Friday if the company has not reached an agreement to carry races from California racetracks by then, according to a motion approved by the California Horse Racing Board on Monday.

Watch Me Go, the Tampa Bay Derby winner, was not an original nominee to the Triple Crown for a $600 fee in January. But his trainer, Kathleen O'Connell, said he was nominated for the late fee of $6,000 on Sunday.

"None of us are getting any younger, and who knows if we'll ever have another chance," O'Connell said.

O'Connell said Watch Me go "came out of the race great."

Jockey Club seeks report on state of racing industry

The Jockey Club has commissioned a consulting firm to produce a report examining the state and direction of the U.S. racing industry, with the results to be presented at the organization’s Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing in August in Saratoga Springs, according to a letter sent to racing officials seeking their cooperation.

While still leaving a little wiggle room for Uncle Mo to run in the Florida Derby on April 3, trainer Todd Pletcher on Monday said it was still most likely that Uncle Mo would have his final prep for the May 7 Kentucky Derby in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 9.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The victory by Uncle Mo in his 3-year-old debut Saturday was enough to make the colt the favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager at the close of betting Sunday.

Uncle Mo closed as the 3-1 choice when wagering closed at 6 p.m. Eastern. The Todd Pletcher-trained Uncle Mo was a dominant winner of the Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park to run his career record to 4 for 4.

Silver Goblin dies suddenly at age 20

Silver Goblin, the millionaire Oklahoma-bred who finished a valiant second to Cigar in the Grade 1 Oaklawn Handicap in 1995, died on Monday, according to his former trainer, Kenny Smith. He was 20.

Smith trained Silver Goblin throughout a career in which he won 11 stakes races and $1,083,895. He said the gelding died at the Batch, Okla., farm of his owner and breeder, Al Horton.

“I had seen him a week ago,” Smith said. “He was doing great, real well. It was a possible heart attack.”

Runflatout was a suprise favorite for much of Day 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A sizable bet on newcomer Runflatout made for a surprise early favorite and a skewed oddsboard during the opening hours of betting into Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future wager, which began its three-day run at noon Eastern on Friday.

As of 5 p.m., and with $24,592 in the win pool, Runflatout was the 5-2 favorite among the 24 betting interests, followed by To Honor and Serve (9-2), Uncle Mo (6-1), and the mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, at 10-1. An additional $5,498 had been bet into the exacta pool after the first five hours.
