Kentucky Derby: Watch Me Go will run if he makes earnings cut

Watch Me Go, Luis Garcia up, wins the Tampa Bay Derby.

Trainer Kathleen O'Connell reported Tuesday that her Tampa Bay Derby winner Watch Me Go will run in the Kentucky Derby on if he has enough graded earnings to get into the field.

O'Connell said Watch Me Go, who has been stabled at Tampa Bay Downs this winter, would work over the track there either Wednesday or Thursday and then ship to Churchill Downs, where he'll have one final workout before the Derby.

A former administrative employee of the New York Racing Association has filed a civil lawsuit claiming that the association withheld legally required overtime pay and pressured her to accept incomplete immigration forms to issue permits to employees, according to a copy of the lawsuit.

Six racehorses bound for New York die in van fire

After a difficult winter, trainer Richard Schosberg thought he finally had some reason for optimism. Schosberg and a few friends - several new to the sport - got together to buy a son of Malibu Moon at the recent Ocala Breeders Sales’s 2-year-old-in-training auction for a reasonable price of $60,000.

The horse was scheduled to arrive at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon along with five horse - all believed to be 2-year-olds - that were going to other trainers.

Dutrow appeals commission ruling

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The New York-based trainer Richard Dutrow has formally appealed the decision by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's Licensing Review Committee to deny him a license, according to a spokesman for the commission.

John Nerud donates $50,000 to Belmont Park's Anna House

Hall of Fame trainer John Nerud on Thursday donated $50,000 to Anna House, the childcare center located on the grounds at Belmont Park.

"I have more money than days left, so it makes me happy to give to such a worthy cause," said Nerud, 98, who trained more than 1,000 winners including 1968 Horse of the Year Dr. Fager and who was enshrined in racing’s Hall of Fame in 1972.

Nerud has been a big supporter of Anna House - a place for the children of backstretch workers at Belmont - since it opened in 2003.

Chris Day Jr., longtime trainer, dies at 79

Chris Day Jr., a longtime trainer in Ohio and Kentucky, died Wednesday, April 13, after a battle with kidney and respiratory illness. He was 79.

Affectionately known as "Boss Hogg" by many at the racetrack, Day was the father of Indiana steward Tim Day.

Visitation will be Monday, April 18 from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a mass at St. Paul Church at 7301 Dixie Highway in Florence, Ky., with burial at St. Stephen's cemetery

Breeders' Cup backs effort against raceday medication

Add the Breeders’ Cup to the growing list of organizations that have endorsed a recent call to eliminate raceday medications in the next five years.

At a meeting on Thursday, the board of the Breeders’ Cup appointed a subcommittee that has been asked to develop “a plan and a timetable” on the elimination of raceday medications during its year-end event, which includes 14 races held over two days, according to the organization. The board also voted to endorse the elimination of raceday medications “in principle.”
