Saratoga: NBC, Versus to televise stakes

Racing at Saratoga is back on national television.

After turning to regional telecasts of Saratoga’s premier events the last two summers, the New York Racing Association reached a deal with NBC Sports Group to televise eight one-hour weekend shows highlighting many of the Grade 1 stakes to be run during the 40-day meet. There will be one-hour programs each of the seven Saturdays of the meet as well as a one-hour telecast on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Churchill Downs: Baze memorial set for Friday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A memorial tribute honoring Michael Baze has been scheduled for between races Friday at Churchill Downs, where the 24-year-old jockey was found dead in his vehicle Tuesday afternoon. The brief service is scheduled for after the fourth race at about 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

An autopsy performed Wednesday proved inconclusive as to the cause of death. The Jefferson County (Ky.) coroner's office said results of toxicology tests will not be available for several weeks.

Toby's Corner healing well

Toby’s Corner, who was forced to miss the Kentucky Derby because of lameness, has responded well to treatment in recent days and could return to training next week, his trainer, Graham Motion, said Thursday.

“He has significantly improved in the last 48 hours,” Motion said on a national teleconference. “He had an acupuncture treatment 48 hours ago, and since then we’ve seen big improvement. I would say he’s marginally off, if at all.”

Motion said he “maybe would put the tack on him next week.” Toby’s Corner is at Motion’s barn at the Fair Hill training center in Maryland.

Dutrow hearing in New York postponed

New York regulators have rescheduled a hearing to consider whether to revoke Richard Dutrow Jr.’s trainer’s license to June 1-2, as options for the trainer to enter horses in other states continue to dwindle.

Dutrow was initially scheduled to appear before the New York State Racing and Wagering Board on May 10-11, but the hearings were rescheduled at the request of Dutrow’s attorney, Gerard Romsky, who asked for additional time to prepare, according to Joe Mahoney, a spokesman for the board. Dutrow’s license in New York expires on Aug. 5, according to board records.

Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation names new CEO

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has hired a new chief executive officer, Rob Hinkle, who most recently was chief operating officer at the 2010 World Games 2010 Foundation, the company that produced the World Equestrian Games at Lexington’s Kentucky Horse Park.

Hinkle will be based in Lexington.
