The New York Racing Association and NBC Sports have agreed to a two-year extension of their agreement for broadcasting major stakes from Saratoga, the two organizations announced Wednesday.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park has opened a new website in connection with the track’s Thoroughbred After-Care Program, which was launched in February. The web site, www.gpaftercare.com, will help raise awareness of Thoroughbred retirement, supply information for adopting and sponsoring horses, and provide fans with updates on retired racehorses.
The site notes several success stories, including the Fort Lauderdale mounted police and the five former racehorses who help them patrol the city.
The Massachusetts House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill Wednesday night that would allow for three free-standing casinos and one slots parlor. The Senate is scheduled to begin to debate the bill Sept. 26.
The bill, which passed on a vote of 123-32, would give the state’s only Thoroughbred racetrack, Suffolk Downs, an opportunity to bid on one of the gambling licenses. Earlier this year, Suffolk Downs struck an agreement with Caesars Entertainment Group to jointly develop a casino at the track, if legislation was passed allowing for expanding gambling in the state.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Gennadi Dorochenko came to the United States in 1993 with $500 to his name and a plan to transfer his career as a Thoroughbred horseman in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar to the Southern California city of Los Angeles. The move was rash. Dorochenko stayed with a friend’s family for two weeks. Then he began living on the streets. He tried to find work at Santa Anita but had no green card, knew only a few words of English, had no way to break in.
Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel had his sentence for a drunken-driving offense during the Ellis Park meet suspended this week, pending his successful completion of a diversionary program for alcohol abuse.
New York State Sen. Thomas K. Duane (D-Manhattan) introduced legislation on Tuesday banning the use of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide, commonly referred to as Lasix, on any horse participating in a state-sanctioned race. The bill assesses penalties for the use of Lasix and for the use of performance-enhancing drugs, which are already prohibited.
