Hearing set in Pennsylvania horse slaughter case

A 24-year-old Pennsylvania woman who is alleged to have defrauded two horsemen by selling horses for slaughter is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 6, according to news reports.

The woman, Kelsey Lefever, has been charged with one count of deceptive business practices and four counts of theft by deception. Three of the counts are felonies.

Cold Cash 123, the winner of major stakes at Ruidoso Downs, Lone Star Park, and Sunland Park in 2011, was named World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse for 2011 at a ceremony in Oklahoma City on Wednesday evening.

Racing for Carolyn and Walter Bay of Clare, Mich., Cold Cash 123 won six of eight starts and $818,447 in 2011 to secure the top title as well as divisional honors as champion 3-year-old and champion 3-year-old gelding.

Cold Cash 123’s major stakes wins of 2011 were the Rainbow Derby, Texas Classic Derby, and Championship at Sunland Park.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – With the Eclipse Awards being held in California, two of the most popular winners on Monday night were from the home team. There were rousing cheers in the ballroom at the Beverly Wilshire hotel when both Acclamation and, especially, Amazombie were announced as champions.

Both horses are California-breds, and both provided rewards for people who have been participating in the game for decades.

Study projects Kentucky casinos would generate $1.1 billion per year
