Blue Grass gives Hansen opportunity to regain spotlight

Tom Keyser
Hansen's odds dropped from 12-1 to 8-1 following his impressive win in Saturday's Gotham at Aqueduct.

Even though Hansen beat Union Rags and Creative Cause in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to secure the Eclipse Award for the division, and even though he scored a decisive victory from an outside post in the Gotham in his most recent start, Hansen still seemingly is dogged by doubts over whether he’s good enough, especially going 1 1/4 miles, to win the Kentucky Derby on May 5.

He was a fat 26-1 in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby future wager, closed at 9-1 in Pool 2 – which was the weekend of the Gotham – and was 8-1 in Pool 3, behind Union Rags, and the same price as Creative Cause.

Kentucky Derby: Reveron may enter Lexington in last-ditch effort for graded earnings

Barbara D. Livingston
Reveron could make a start in the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland on April 21.

MIAMI – Trainer Agustin Bezara said Monday that he will nominate Reveron to the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland on April 21, with the thought of perhaps running the Florida Derby runner-up in a last-ditch attempt to earn enough graded stakes money to get into the Kentucky Derby field.

As of Monday, Reveron, winner of the ungraded Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year’s Day, had $220,000 in graded earnings, which put him 23rd on the list. If the Kentucky Derby field overfills as expected, the 20 3-year-olds with the most graded stakes earnings will be allowed to run.

Kentucky Derby: Race for graded stakes cash intensifies

Benoit & Associates
From left: I’ll Have Another, Creative Cause, and Blueskiesnrainbows run 1-2-3 in the Santa Anita Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif. – In the winner’s circle following the Santa Anita Derby on Saturday, the scores of employees of owner Paul Reddam who stuffed themselves into the enclosure along with I’ll Have Another began chanting “CashCall, CashCall,” and while it may have been a shout out to their boss’ business, it was an appropriate rallying cry for this year’s Kentucky Derby, because it appears a large influx of cash is going to be needed to make the Derby field.

Havre de Grace is being pointed to the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.- Horse of the Year Havre de Grace will most likely make her next start in the Grade 2, $300,000 La Troienne at Churchill Downs after being withdrawn from consideration for two of Oaklawn Park's biggest races, the Grade 1, $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap early Saturday afternoon, and later in the day, the Grade 2, $400,000 Oaklawn Handicap.

The La Troienne, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, will be run May 4.

“That would be the next best [race] that sets her up for the Grade 1 Phipps in New York,” said Rick Porter, who owns Havre de Grace.
