Kentucky Derby 2012: Wet Florida weather alters schedule for Take Charge Indy, Pletcher horses

Barbara D. Livingston
Take Charge Indy worked five furlongs in 1:00.47 on Thursday at Palm Meadows.

Kentucky Derby hopefuls Gemologist, El Padrino, and Take Charge Indy were expected to arrive at Churchill Downs on Tuesday and hit the track for the first time on Wednesday morning. It will be the first time in about a week they will get to step on dry land.

Rain in south Florida over the weekend forced these horses to train over wet tracks and do less than they likely would have had the conditions been dry.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Less than ideal conditions for Gemologist, El Padrino

El Padrino worked more slowly than trainer Todd Pletcher wanted to see during pre-dawn hours over a muddy track Sunday at Palm Meadows.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Maybe next year, trainer Todd Pletcher will send his horses to Southern California to train for the Kentucky Derby.

Hoping to avoid the wet weather that plagued him in Kentucky last year, Pletcher opted this spring to keep his Kentucky Derby hopefuls Gemologist and El Padrino in south Florida for as long as possible. Given the beautiful weather here all winter it seemed like a good idea.

In reality, not so much.

Kentucky Oaks: Pletcher says In Lingerie will await Black-Eyed Susan

Patrick Lang Photography
In Lingerie wins the Bourbonette Stakes under John Velazquez.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday that In Lingerie, six-length winner of the Bourbonette Oaks in March, would skip the Kentucky Oaks and instead point to the Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico on May 18.

“We decided a couple more weeks would do her well,” said Pletcher, who trains In Lingerie for Aaron Wellman and Gary Barber. “She’s a lightly raced filly; only run three times. Maybe the Black-Eyed Susan makes a little more sense this early in her career.”

2012 Kentucky Derby: Rain keeps Gemologist, El Padrino in their Florida barn

Barbara D. Livingston
A breeze in two weeks at Palm Meadows will help trainer Todd Pletcher determine whether to send Broadway's Alibi to the May 4 Kentucky Oaks.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The electronic sign on the Florida Turnpike read "Severe Weather Ahead. Reduce Speed." It was both ominous and accurate.

Thunderstorms with heavy rain and lightning hit the south Florida area earlier than anticipated Saturday, slowing down most of the equine traffic at the saturated Palm Meadows training center, where a few horses pointing to next week’s Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks still reside.

Kentucky Derby: Tackling the big questions and key horses

Tom Keyser
Take Charge Indy's (right) win in the Florida Derby raised two major questions: Was it a fluke? And did Union Rags (left) have a valid excuse?
