Churchill Downs: Albarado off Oaks Day mounts following arrest for domestic violence

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jockey Robby Albarado was arrested Friday morning and is off his mounts at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day.

Albarado was arrested at 9:15 a.m. Eastern Friday at his Louisville home, said Carl Yates, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. He was arrested on a warrant for fourth degree-assault domestic violence, the spokesman said.

Later in the day, Albarado was suspended indefinitely by Churchill Downs stewards.

Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation sued by New York State

New York State's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, filed suit Thursday against the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the nation's largest non-profit retirement group for Thoroughbred racehorses, alleging that the group's board "put horses in danger and [TRF] finances in ruin."

The retirement foundation's chairman, John C. Moore, said Thursday afternoon that he had not seen the complaint but denied its allegations as reported by news outlets.

Canadian Hall of Fame: Pair to be inducted in 'Legends' category

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Patrick MacMurchy and jockey John Dewhurst will be this year’s inductees in the “Legends” category for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

MacMurchy, born in Scotland in 1895, moved to the United States in 1905, and worked with some of the larger racing stables in New Jersey and Kentucky before achieving success on the Ontario circuit in the years following World War II.

Suspensions leave NYRA's upper management in limbo

Only six months ago, the future of the New York Racing Association seemed bright. Revenues from the operation of a casino at Aqueduct promised to put an end to the association’s stubborn financial problems and boost purses to levels that would solidify New York’s position as the best racing circuit in the U.S.

But despite that success, a handful of other developments have darkened NYRA’s prospects, including the suspension on Monday of Charles Hayward, the association’s president since 2004, and Patrick Kehoe, NYRA’s legal counsel since 2002.

Former racehorse wins Rolex Three-Day Event

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Thoroughbred former racehorse, Parklane Hawk, won the prestigious Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event Sunday at Lexington’s Kentucky Horse Park.

The event, which combines dressage, cross-country jumping, and showjumping, is the only annual three-day event in the Western Hemisphere to receive a four-star designation. It also featured selection trials to choose the United States three-day eventing team for this year’s Olympic Games in London. There were 21 off-track Thoroughbreds slated to take plart in the event.
