Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Asmussen retained faith in Tapizar

Barbara D. Livingston
The connections of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar have not yet discussed whether he retire or return to race again next season.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Steve Asmussen was hoarse Sunday morning, apparently because he had rooted too enthusiastically for a horse. Asmussen seemed tired but very happy when all alone trackside at Santa Anita, just a few feet and a few hours removed from where and when he greeted the victorious Tapizar following the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Breeders' Cup: Wagering on Friday card down five percent

Total commingled handle for the 10 races at Santa Anita on Friday, including six Breeders' Cup races, was down 5 percent compared with the Friday card at Churchill Downs last year, according to figures released by Breeders' Cup.

The decline, from $50.05 million last year to $47.58 million this year, was the second consecutive drop in handle for the Friday card, which was added when Breeders' Cup expanded to 11 races in 2007. Since then, the number of Breeders' Cup races has increased to 15, with six on Friday and nine on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said that Questing, who was eased entering the backstretch and subsequently vanned off following Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic, showed no signs of any serious injury after being examined upon returning to her barn.

“She cooled out fine,” said McLaughlin, who trains Questing for Godolphin Racing. “She has no major injuries. She was never on the bridle. She just did not want to perform today.”

Chad Brown walks with Jeffrey Sanchez before the start of the Ladies' Classic after winning the Filly & Mare Turf with Zagora.

ARCADIA, Calif. - It was a disappointing ending to what had been a terrific day for trainer Chad Brown.

On top of the world after saddling Zagora to a victory in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Brown was knocked down a few pegs when Awesome Feather, unbeaten in 10 previous starts, finished sixth, 10 lengths behind Royal Delta in the $2 million Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita.

Hurricane Sandy spares Belmont Park, but not the neighborhood

ELMONT, N.Y. – Three days after Hurricane Sandy ripped through New York, everything looks pretty normal at Belmont Park. More than 100 trees fell there during the storm, but by Friday morning they had all been cleared and training had returned to normal after being suspended earlier in the week.

A look across the street, though, reveals that all is not yet well. A line of cars at the lone open gas station stretches several blocks and snakes around the corner, no end of it in sight.

Napravnik’s name grows with every win

Barbara D. Livingston
Rosie Napravnik rides Shanghai Bobby in Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Saturday. A win would make them the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif. – With the recent retirement of Chantal Sutherland, Rosie Napravnik has inherited the role as racing’s most high-profile active female jockey.

There was a time when Napravnik tried to hide the fact she was a female jockey, riding under the pseudonym A. R. Napravnik. (Her given first name is Anna).

“That was when I was trying to get myself started,” said Napravnik, who began her career on the Maryland circuit in 2005. “That was actually [trainer] Dickie Small’s idea.”

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: California Flag gets final shot at glory

Barbara D. Livingston
California Flag has run in every Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and won the race in 2009.

ARCADIA, Calif. – At age 8, the venerable gelding California Flag has been out to see the world. Bred and generally campaigned in California, he has traveled east the past two years to race in Kentucky. But that was nothing. During the winter of 2009-10, California Flag went the other direction when he left California, shipping to Hong Kong, where he finished a close fifth in the $1,548,000 Hong Kong Sprint, and to Dubai, where he was a good third in the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint in March 2010.
