Stronach steps down as chairman of auto-parts company Magna International

Frank Stronach, the billionaire horse and racetrack owner, has resigned as chairman of the board of directors of Magna International, the publicly traded auto-parts company he founded.

Stronach, 80, cited his recent political activity in his native Austria for the decision to resign. Stronach is seeking a seat in the country’s parliament as head of a new conservative political party that supports Austria’s abandonment of the euro for a return to the schilling.

Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge: Defending champion wins again

Patrick McGoey, the defending champion, won the live-money Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge again last weekend, betting his entire bankroll in the final race to surpass the eventual second-place finisher, Christian Hellmers – who finished second in the 2011 tournament as well.

The highly improbable repeat performance netted McGoey, a resident of New Orleans, $255,341 in winnings, including the $170,000 first-place prize. Hellmers took home $154,525, including his bankroll at the end of the contest.

2012 Breeders' Cup: Lasix ban results in trio of 2-year-olds bleeding

ARCADIA, Calif. - At least three juveniles who participated in Breeders’ Cup races last weekend at Santa Anita bled, according to their connections, after seemingly contrary information was put out by the equine director of the California Horse Racing Board.

Trainer John Sadler said Sunday thta both Capo Bastone and Monument, third and last, respectively, in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, bled. Trainer Mark Casse said that Spring in the Air, who finished fifth in Friday’s Juvenile Fillies, also bled.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Little Mike’s win in Saturday’s $2,727,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita could lead to an international campaign in 2013.

Trainer Dale Romans said after the race that “all options are open. We’ll look at Dubai.”

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: Shanghai Bobby, He's Had Enough point toward Triple Crown trail

ARCADIA, Calif. - Shanghai Bobby and He’s Had Enough, separated by a head in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, both came out of the race in good order, according to their connections, and will be given every opportunity to hop on the Triple Crown trail next year.

Capo Bastone, the third-place finisher in the Juvenile, was found to have bled significantly, according to his connections and will be sent to a nearby clinic for evaluation. None of the 2-year-olds who raced at this year’s Breeders’ Cup was permitted to run on Lasix.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Wise Dan set a Santa Anita turf-course record of 1:31.78 winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile here Saturday. He might also have set a Breeders’ Cup record for speed of departure from a host venue.

Wise Dan was shipped back to Kentucky from California in the middle of the night, leaving Santa Anita before 3 a.m. Sunday. He came, he saw, he conquered – and he got out of Dodge. His Beyer Speed Figure for the BC MIle came back a 107.
