Fort Erie: New Democratic Party leader pledges support for track

FORT ERIE, Ontario – Andrea Horwath, leader of Ontario’s New Democratic Party, was at Fort Erie on Tuesday, visiting with horsemen and patrons and holding a press conference focusing on the future of the border oval.

Fort Erie, which was concluding its 2013 racing season, did not receive any funding from the Liberal government in a report released Friday by the Ontario Racing Industry Transition Panel, which was commissioned last year by the province’s premier, Kathleen Wynne.

Breeders' Cup Day concert planned

A lineup of pop musicians will perform between the races on the Saturday, Nov. 2, card of the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita this year, Breeders’ Cup announced Tuesday.

The musicians will perform in the infield at Santa Anita as part of an event that also will feature a beer garden and 30 Southern California-based food trucks, Breeders’ Cup said in a release. The infield can be accessed by anyone who purchases a ticket to the event.

Fresno: Handle rises at meeting

Ontrack wagering showed a 2 percent increase and the all-sources handle improved 3 percent at the nine-day Big Fresno Fair race meeting that concluded Monday.

The ontrack live racing handle improved from $2,851,317 in 2012 to $2,920,523 this year.

The all-source handle, which included a 6 percent increase in out-of-state wagering on Fresno races, increased from $10,879,597 in 2012 to $11,174,055 this year. All-source handle includes live handle, satellite, out-of-state, and account wagering.

Golden Gate fall meet could influence 2014 racing dates

With the Northern California racing schedule for 2014 still not decided and Golden Gate Fields hoping to extend its six-month-long winter/spring meet into early summer, the 36-day fall meeting that opens Thursday could have an impact on next year’s dates decision.

“Hopefully, we’ll get off on the right foot for the fall meet, and business will improve,” said Golden Gate racing secretary David Jerkens.

Jerkens believes the fall meet has several factors working in its favor.

Emerald Downs: Handle, field size, attendance all rise at meeting

AUBURN, Wash. – Business was good this summer at Emerald Downs. The daily average handle on Emerald races increased by 4.5 percent, and ontrack attendance spiked sharply upward during the 75-day meeting that ended Sept. 29. And the good news didn’t end there: Purses increased markedly from 2012, and for the first time since 2008, the average field size increased as well.

Tampa Bay Downs: Navarro barred for 2013-14 meet

Jorge Navarro, a leading trainer in Florida and New Jersey who is currently serving a 60-day suspension, will be denied stalls at Tampa Bay Downs through next summer, and the track will not accept any of his entries during that time, the top official of the track said Tuesday.

Santa Anita pick six returns $130,000

ARCADIA, Calif. - After a two-day carryover, the pick six paid $130,373 to 10 ticketholders at Santa Anita on Monday.

When Big Bane Theory ($4) won the ninth race, an optional claimer over 1 1/8 miles on turf, it assured the pick six would be hit. With that victory, all 14 runners in the 10th race, a sprint for maiden claimers, were covered on pick six tickets.

The day began with a carryover of $430,034 from Sunday. Bettors added $1,635,493 to the pool.

Nine arrested in Texas for illegal horse racing, gambling

A group of nine people, including six police officers, were arrested Saturday outside Houston and charged with participating in an illegal horse racing and gambling enterprise. The arrests came after an 11-month investigation that included multiple undercover surveillance operations, according to a press release issued by the Harris County District Attorney’s office in Houston.

Santa Anita: Pick-six carryover of $430,034 for Monday

ARCADIA, Calif. – For the second time in a week, there is a multiday carryover in the pick six at Santa Anita for Monday.

The carryover of $430,034 was caused when Ancient Stone ($152.80) pulled a surprise win in Sunday’s ninth race, for maiden claimers over seven furlongs.

There was a three-day carryover of $575,466 into racing last Thursday. Bettors added $2,279,941 to the pool.

Belmont Park: Velazquez sets record for career earnings

John Velazquez established a record for the most purse money won by a North American-based jockey Sunday, when he finished second aboard Bit Bustin in Belmont Park’s ninth race.

The second-place prize of $15,400 pushed Velazquez’s career mount earnings to $297,922,320, surpassing Pat Day’s record of $297,914,839. Coincidentally, Sunday was Day’s 60th birthday. Day retired in 2005 at age 51 with 8,803 wins – fourth all-time in that category – from 40,299 mounts.

Velazquez, 41, ranks 23rd in career wins with 5,082 from 28,127 mounts.
