Beyer: Here's why slower Juvenile got better figure than Juvenile Fillies

Barbara D. Livingston
New Year's Day was awarded an 88 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the BC Juvenile, six points higher than the 1-2 finishers in the faster BC Juvenile Fillies earlier on the same card.

Mucho Macho Man won the biggest race of the Breeders’ Cup, and nobody should be surprised that he earned the biggest Beyer Speed Figure at Santa Anita, a 112.  But racing fans who examine all the figures on Saturday may suspect an error in the stakes for 2-year-olds.  How could New Year’s Day win the Juvenile in slower time than the Juvenile Fillies and earn a higher figure?

New Year’s Day received a figure of 88 after running 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.52. She’s a Tiger and Ria Antonia each got an 82 after covering the same distance in 1:43.02 and finishing a nose apart.

John Velazquez was injured when Secret Compass, his mount in the BC Juvenile Fillies, broke down. He is expected to be hospitalized for at least another four or five days.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will remain in a Pasadena hospital for four or five more days after undergoing emergency surgery Saturday afternoon to remove his spleen, according to his agent, Angel Cordero Jr.

In addition to having his spleen removed, Velazquez needed fluid drained from his pancreas, according to Cordero, who has kept in contact with Leona Velazquez, Johnny’s wife.

“They might let him out in four or five days if everything goes well,” Cordero said. “It’s nothing life-threatening.”

Breeders' Cup: For Royal Delta and Princess of Sylmar, an unfortunate end to a fine season

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Bill Mott (right) with Royal Delta after her fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. A decision on whether she will race next year will be made in a couple of weeks, Mott said.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The two beasts of the East, Royal Delta and Princess of Sylmar, faded away in Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff as gently as the late-afternoon sunshine slipping from the Southern California sky.

With a half-mile to run in the Distaff, Royal Delta, a two-time champion and two-time Breeders’ Cup winner, already had started losing position. She finished fourth. Princess of Sylmar, so special winning the Kentucky Oaks, the Alabama, and the Beldame, barely got out of a gallop, checking in last of six.

Breeders' Cup: Beholder, speed bias the talk of Friday's card

Justin N. Lane
Pace-setting Goldencents took advantage of a track kind to speed to win the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Beholder strongly enhanced her chances of being named champion 3-year-old filly with an overpowering victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Friday at Santa Anita, a day when the speed-biased nature of the main track was a major talking point.
