Voters in New York on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure giving the state the authority to award seven new casino licenses as part of a plan pushed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Mucho Macho Man returned to his winter home at Gulfstream Park late Wednesday morning, where the scene was a lot quieter than it was several days earlier at Santa Anita following his game victory over Will Take Charge in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Voters in the two Massachusetts districts where Suffolk Downs is located split in a vote Tuesday over whether to allow a casino at the track, introducing fresh questions for a project that lost critical momentum when the track’s partner pulled out 2 1/2 weeks ago.
Voters in East Boston, where 100 acres of the track are located, rejected the measure by a vote of 56 percent to 44 percent. Voters in Revere, where 50 acres of the track are located, supported the measure by a vote of 61 percent to 39 percent.
A graveside burial service will be held for Larry Barrera, son of the late Hall of Fame trainer Lazaro Barrera and an accomplished trainer in his own right, at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia, Calif. Barrera died at home in Carlsbad, Calif., on Oct. 27. It was his 54th birthday.
California, it was said, never was the ideal spot for Europeans to ship for the Breeders’ Cup. The trip was too far, the weather too hot, the courses not suited to the horses. When Santa Anita switched from a synthetic surface – which the Euros loved in 2008 and 2009 – back to an American-style dirt track, it was said that the Euros would think twice about shipping, if they shipped at all. And when the Breeders’ Cup’s plan to ban Lasix from all its races slipped away earlier this year, it was said the decision would have a negative impact on overseas participation.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Jeremiah Englehart thought the highlight of his year was going to be when his New York-bred King Kreesa finished a more-than-respectable second to reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga.
That was relegated to second place when Ria Antonia, a horse that wasn’t even in his barn two months ago, was moved by the Santa Anita stewards to first place in Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, after first-place finisher She’s a Tiger was disqualified for bumping with Ria Antonia in deep stretch.
ARCADIA, Calif. – The quarter crack that prevented Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Ron the Greek from starting in Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic is a frequent concern for Southern California trainers.
Several local trainers interviewed Sunday said they deal with quarter cracks regularly.
“I probably only have four,” trainer Bill Spawr said, shaking his head in frustration.
Spawr has a 30-horse stable.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita ended its 24-day autumn meeting Sunday with a gain in all-sources handle and steady results in ontrack attendance, track president George Haines said Sunday.
The track did not release detailed attendance and handle figures for the meeting, which included the Breeders’ Cup programs on Friday and Saturday. Santa Anita hosted the Breeders’ Cup races in 2012.
Haines said that all-sources handle for the autumn meeting showed a gain of approximately 12 percent and that ontrack attendance was “even with last year.”
ARCADIA, Calif. - Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith won the Shoemaker Award for the second consecutive year as outstanding jockey of the two days of Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita on Friday and Saturday.
Based on a point system of 10-5-3-1 for top four finishes, Smith’s mounts gained 37 points, four more than Gary Stevens, who finished with 33 points.
Between them, the two veterans won five Breeders’ Cup races.
