Los Alamitos cancels weekend racing due to weather conditions

Los Alamitos canceled racing from Friday through Sunday evenings because of wet conditions, track officials said on Friday.

The decision was made Friday morning after approximately two inches of rain fell on the Orange County track from early Thursday to mid-morning on Friday. Entries were taken for Friday and Saturday, but entries were not completed for Sunday.

“We didn’t want to race on it at night,” said Brad McKinzie, the general manager of the track’s Thoroughbred operation. “The weather is miserable. It’s a constant rain.”

Fonner Park cancels Saturday and Sunday

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - An arctic airmass expected to move into the region late Friday has prompted Fonner Park to cancel its live racing cards for both Saturday and Sunday.

Entries for Sunday's card were to be taken Friday morning, but activity at the entry box was very light due to the dismal forecast. Officials made the decision to cancel Saturday's card and a Sunday card was not drawn.

The Bold Accent Stakes scheduled for Saturday will be re-drawn and run next Saturday along with the Ogataul Stakes for Nebraska-breds.

Darley buys majority interest in Cairo Prince

Sheik Mohammed al-Maktoum’s Darley operation has purchased a majority interest in multiple graded stakes winner Cairo Prince, considered among the leading candidates for the Kentucky Derby.

The Pioneerof the Nile colt, winner of the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 25, will remain in the barn of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and will race in the colors of Godolphin Racing. He will continue to point for the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 29.

Norm Schmitt, jockey agent, dies at 77

Norton “Norm” Schmitt, a fixture for decades at Churchill Downs and other tracks as the longtime cigar-chomping agent for retired jockey Larry Melancon, died Wednesday following a long illness in the Cleveland suburb of Westlake, near where his brother lives. He was 77.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, was in the familiar spot as favorite after the first full day of betting into Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which began a three-day run Thursday.

With $49,191 resting in the win pool Friday morning, the field was the 6-5 favorite, followed by Cairo Prince (13-1), Bayern (16-1), Honor Code (16-1), Top Billing (16-1), and Shared Belief (19-1). Another $13,866 had been bet in exactas.

Santa Anita pick six pays $20,000 after carryover

ARCADIA, Calif. - The pick six paid $20,091 at Santa Anita on Thursday after the pool reached $928,030. Interest in the pick six was heightened by a carryover of $198,609 from Sunday.

Thursday, there were 35 perfect pick six tickets. Consolation tickets with five winners were worth $248.80.

The winners of the pick six races were Zackos My Man ($7.80), Tuckers Point ($7.60), Lilly’s Perfect ($5.20), Onna Bugeisha ($15), County Lineman ($12.40), and Divine Way ($3).
