All of racing found out the night of Jan. 18 what Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has known for decades – Willis Horton is one of the sport’s best-kept secrets.
During that Eclipse Awards gala at Gulfstream Park, Horton had the room roaring when he gave a folksy, funny, and heartfelt acceptance speech for his champion 3-year-old male Will Take Charge. He’s since been told he needs an agent, while the speech itself has received hundreds of views on YouTube.
[bc_video_id:317908:]ARCADIA, Calif. – The gang of top turf milers has gathered for Saturday’s $350,000 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita. Well, almost the whole gang.
“The only one missing is Wise Dan,” trainer Neil Drysdale said.
The Grade 1 Kilroe Mile drew a field of 10, led by Za Approval and Silentio, the second- and third-place finishers behind Wise Dan in the Breeders’ Cup Mile here last November.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Blingo gave jockey Aaron Gryder a glowing first impression when he rode the 5-year-old gelding to a hard-fought win the $300,500 San Antonio Stakes on Feb. 8.
Gryder rode Blingo for the first time in the Grade 2 San Antonio, closing from fifth to finish a half-length in front of the longshot Imperative. The victory has led to a start in Saturday’s $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap for Blingo.
The Big Cap will be Blingo’s first race at 1 1/4 miles, but Gryder said he doesn’t think the distance will be an issue.
Todd Pletcher and Mark Casse both have entered two horses in the Grade 2, $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby, the annual meet highlight to be run Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar, Fla.
Pletcher will send out Vinceremos and Surfing U S A, while Casse counters with Conquest Titan and Matador. In all, 10 3-year-olds are entered in the 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby, which is worth 85 points toward eligibility into the May 3 Kentucky Derby, including 50 to the winner.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Lochte earned his way to Santa Anita for Saturday’s $350,000 Frank Kilroe Mile with a win in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap at odds of 39-1 on Feb. 9.
The results of Saturday’s race will help owner Caroline Vogel and trainer Marcus Vitali determine whether a return trip to California for the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November is realistic.
Lochte won his stakes debut in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, closing from fourth in a field of eight to win by 2 3/4 lengths.
