Beholder's next race likely to come in spring 2015

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2015 campaign for Beholder is likely to begin in spring, trainer Richard Mandella said Sunday morning, a day after Spendthrift Farms announced the two-time champion had been withdrawn from an autumn sale and would race at age 5.

Beholder spiked a fever one week ago and did not pre-enter the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Her future was unclear until late Saturday when B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm announced Beholder had been withdrawn from the Fasig-Tipton November sale and would stay in training. Mandella was thrilled.

Santa Anita carryovers in pick six, super high five

ARCADIA, Calif. - There are two carryovers for Sunday’s program at Santa Anita - $166,604 in the pick six and $62,419 in the super high five.

A win by Divine Vision ($15.80) in Saturday’s ninth race clinched the pick six carryover. A runner-up finish by 49-1 Lay It On in the ninth made the super high five very difficult to hit.

Sunday’s pick six covers the fourth through ninth races. There was one early scratch in the sequence as of Saturday – Midnight Lady is out of the sixth race.

The pick six races have fields of 9, 10, 11, 10, 9, and 10.

Hollendorfer making all the right moves with Shared Belief

Shigeki Kikkawa
Shared Belief won his seventh straight start Saturday in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ALBANY, Calif. – Shared Belief and Jerry Hollendorfer are made for each other, and they’re made like each other. Seen from afar, in the inky light here at Golden Gate Fields early one morning several days ago, they’re not very imposing – smallish, even. Yet get up close, and they swell with an intimidating presence. Try to compete with them, and you’re likely to lose.

Romans well stocked for Stars of Tomorrow card

Michael Burns
Conquest Tsunami wins the Colin Stakes on July 26 at Woodbine.

Even the most vocal critics might concede that Churchill Downs has some pretty neat traditions, not even counting the Kentucky Derby, one of the greatest in all of sports.

One tradition that began in 2005 is the Stars of Tomorrow program for 2-year-olds, which continues to thrive at every fall meet, as evidenced by what’s in store for the Sunday opening of the 26-day fall meet at the Louisville, Ky., track.

Tough Customer will skip Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Tough Customer, who was first on the also-eligible/preference list to get into the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will pass the race even if he gets in, trainer Wayne Catalano confirmed Thursday.

Catalano said he just wanted more time with the horse and will consider the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29 for the son of Giant’s Causeway owned by Gary and Mary West. Tough Customer won his debut at Churchill and then finished a well-beaten fourth in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland.
