Sam Houston sees gains in handle, attendance

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston experienced a 15 percent increase in average daily handle on its live races during its 32-date Thoroughbred meet that closed Tuesday, the track announced. Sam Houston also experienced gains in average daily attendance and field size.

Sam Houston handled an average of $1,601,537 a day on its live races at this meet. Of that amount, an average of $1,484,809 a day was bet offtrack and an average of $116,728 ontrack.

Rainbow 6 carryover of $847,840 for Thursday

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The jackpot in the Rainbow 6 for Thursday at Gulfstream Park stands at $847,840 after two winning odds-on favorites Wednesday led to another carryover.

Forty-three 20-cent tickets, each worth $4,406, were sold on the winning combination Wednesday. The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out only when there is a single perfect ticket.

There were 1,040 live tickets (none for a solo) going into the last race in the sequence, the 11th race. The winning numbers were 4-4-6-10-4-4. Respective odds on those winners were 2-1, 3-1, 16-1, 3-5, 1-5, and 22-1.

Super Derby shifted to Sept. 12 at Louisiana Downs

Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., has moved the date of the Grade 2, $400,000 Super Derby to Sept. 12, according to a track official. The race had originally been scheduled for Sept. 5, but will be run a week later because it will be a better fit on the national racing calendar, said Trent McIntosh, director of racing operations for Louisiana Downs.

The Super Derby will remain 1 1/8 miles in distance. Early nominations are Aug. 15.

Woodbine to replace Polytrack with Tapeta in 2016

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine has announced that the Polytrack on its one-mile main track will be replaced with another synthetic surface, Tapeta, in time for the 2016 racing season.

Construction on the Tapeta track will commence Dec. 1. The four dates scheduled for the first week of December will be moved to Thursdays in November, pending Ontario Racing Commission approval. Closing day of this year’s 133-day meet is set for Nov. 29.

Big card at Laurel on March 21

Due to lost training days resulting from recent winter weather, Laurel Park has rescheduled two $100,000 stakes for 3-year-olds from this Saturday to March 21.

The stakes are the 1 1/8-mile Private Terms and the one-mile Caesar’s Wish for fillies.

There will now be four stakes at Laurel on March 21. The $100,000 Harrison Johnson Memorial, for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles, and the $100,000 Conniver, for fillies and mares at seven furlongs, were already on the schedule.
