Canadian Derby once again meet highlight

There are no notable changes from 2014 to the 37-race stakes schedule, worth just over $2 million, at Northlands Park this year.

The Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby is the marquee race at the meet, which begins May 1 and concludes Oct. 24. The 1 3/8-mile Canadian Derby, set for Aug. 15, is the only graded race at Northlands.

Supporting the Canadian Derby are the $50,000 Sonoma for 3-year-old fillies and two $50,000 stakes for 3-year-olds and up: the 1 1/16-mile Westerner and the 6 1/2-furlong Sun Sprint.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Trainer Jack Carava won the 1,000th race of his career Saturday in the first race with Perfect Set. Typically modest, Carava deflected praise for his accomplishment.

“It’s good for me, and it’s good for the help. A lot of the people working for me have been with me a long time,” said Carava, 48. “They have as much to do with it as anyone.”

Carava was a longtime assistant to Jerry Fanning and first started training a handful of horses on his own while still in Fanning’s employ in 1986. He went out on his own in 1993.

Conquest Typhoon wins the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes on Nov. 30 at Del Mar.

A group of 15 3-year-olds were entered Sunday for Saturday’s Grade 3, $550,000 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park, resulting in three exclusions due to the track’s 12-horse starting-gate limit, and Turfway not having an also-eligible list for its signature race.

Although entries closed Sunday, Spiral post positions will not be drawn until approximately 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, when a draw luncheon is hosted at the Horseshoe Casino of Cincinnati, which sponsors the Spiral.

Caesars Entertainment, with Horseshoe Casino being one of its entities, is part owner in Turfway Park.
