New York relaxes rules for coupled entries

The New York State Gaming Commission on Monday unanimously adopted two rules supported by the New York Racing Association that are designed to increase wagering on races with horses that share ownership.

The first rule will allow stewards to uncouple horses with shared ownership in stakes races of $50,000 or more. Prior to the rule passing, horses with shared ownership could only be uncoupled in stakes races of $1 million or more.

American Pharoah effortless in half-mile work

ARCADIA, Calif. – American Pharoah worked a half-mile in 47.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday, displaying minimal effort in an exercise that moves the Triple Crown winner closer to a start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2.

Working alone under jockey Martin Garcia, American Pharoah galloped out five furlongs in 59.60 seconds, according to Santa Anita clockers. Trainer Bob Baffert recorded slightly quicker times: 24 seconds for the first quarter-mile and 47.40 for a half-mile. Baffert timed American Pharoah galloping out in 59.80.

Ironicus healthy for Wednesday allowance

ELMONT, N.Y. – After a cough forced him to scratch from the Grade 3 Poker Stakes on June 14, Ironicus looks to jump-start his promising campaign in an $85,000, third-level allowance race Wednesday at Belmont Park.

The one-mile race is carded as the third and thus is not part of a pick six wager that begins the day with a $39,232 carryover. That sequence starts on race 4 and includes a maiden race for 3-year-olds and up that marks the second career start of Cozmic One, the first foal from the champion mare Zenyatta.

Far Niente scores upset in Vessels Maturity

CYPRESS, Calif. – Far Niente won the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity for the second consecutive year on Sunday evening at Los Alamitos, scoring an upset win against Moonist, the champion 3-year-old Quarter Horse of 2014, who could only finish third.

Far Niente ($17.40) ran 400 yards in 19.58 seconds, benefiting from a strong start to win by 1 1/4 lengths over 29-1 Well and Good. Moonist, the 1-10 favorite, broke slowly and finished a nose behind Well and Good in the field of nine.

Officials make plans for 'Pharoah Phan Phest'

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Now that Monmouth Park has won the American Pharoah lottery, the hard work begins. How do you best prepare the facility to handle an all-time record crowd?

With less than four weeks to go before the Aug. 2 Haskell, track officials are making a wide array of plans to make sure people enjoy themselves.

"The question we keep asking ourselves is: 'How can we offer as good of a fan experience as possible?' " track president Bob Kulina said Sunday.

Carter rides 10 winners in Rainbow Futurity trials

Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. won 10 of the 32 trials for the Rainbow Quarter Horse Futurity held Friday and Saturday at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. He also was aboard First Valiant Sign, who remains the lone horse eligible for a $4 million Triple Crown bonus after he made the finale when running third in the last race of the day Saturday.

Handle on U.S. races down slightly in June

There was less money wagered on U.S. races in June and fewer races run than in June 2014, but the average handle per race increased, according to figures released by Equibase on Saturday.

The results snapped a two-month run of gains over last year and continued the trend of fewer races run than in 2014. However, this past June included eight weekend dates compared with nine in 2014. Handle on weekend dates is usually much higher than weekday races.

American Pharoah gears up for Haskell Invitational

American Pharoah will return to racing at the Haskell Invitational in August.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has won the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park a record seven times, beginning with Belmont Stakes winner Point Given in 2001. It’s safe to say that the atmosphere for this year’s race Aug. 2 will be different. This year, Baffert is bringing Triple Crown hero American Pharoah.
