Colonial Downs in Virginia has filed an application with the state racing commission to conduct one day of all-turf racing Dec. 3, but the president of the state’s recognized horsemen’s group has called the filing a “sham.”
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sam Grossman, better known as “Sam the Bugler,” is on a temporary leave from the New York Racing Association and will not return to play the “Call to Post” during the remainder of the Saratoga meet, the company announced Thursday.

“A lot of people don’t know that he helped establish the HBPA in New York. He helped establish the backstretch health plan for all the workers. He was one of the first advocates for backstretch workers. He was way ahead of his time on that.
“I was privy to a lot of his old stories. I would just eat all that stuff up. He once told me that he never should have run Dr. Fager on the turf. He did it just to show off.”

John Nerud, a towering figure in Thoroughbred racing for nearly six decades, has died at 102. He passed away Thursday at his home in Old Brookville, N.Y. He had celebrated his 102nd birthday on Feb. 9.
In addition to being one of the greatest trainers of all time, Nerud was an esteemed owner and breeder and was a co-founder with John Gaines of the Breeders’ Cup. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972 and was given the Eclipse Award of Merit in 2007.
A Quarter Horse jockey has been summarily suspended by the stewards at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, Ind., after being linked to the discovery of an electrical device, according to the track stewards.
Juan Guerrero, who won the only Quarter Horse race on the Tuesday night card at Indiana Grand, was suspended Wednesday indefinitely, according to Stan Bowker, the chief state steward. Bowker would not comment beyond confirming the suspension, citing an ongoing investigation.
Murray Rojas, a trainer based in the mid-Atlantic, has been indicted on 11 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy by federal authorities for allegedly directing veterinarians to administer substances to horses on race day at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa., according to officials with the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Thirteen horses have been entered to run Saturday in the Arlington Million – nearly twice as many as ran last year.
The Million, Beverly D., Secretariat, and American St. Leger were drawn Tuesday, but entries weren’t publicly revealed until noon Wednesday.
Chad Brown trains three of the Million runners, though one of them, Shining Copper, is entered as a pacemaker for Big Blue Kitten. Ken and Sarah Ramsey own both of those horses, while Slumber, Brown’s third horse in the race, is owned by a partnership that purchased him last fall.
EDMONTON, Alberta – Blue Dancer will break from post No. 2 with leading rider Rico Walcott aboard in the $200,000, Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park on Saturday. Post positions were chosen by the connections of the 12 horses entered in the 1 3/8-mile race for 3-year-olds at a brunch held at Northlands on Wednesday.
Blue Dancer, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, has dominated the local 3-year-old division, and his only loss in eight starts came in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita last November.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – While fans in this region anxiously await a decision on whether American Pharoah will come to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Travers on Aug. 29, it looks like another of the game’s stars will not be coming here this summer.
Wise Dan, the two-time Horse of the Year, will likely make his return to the races in the Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile on Sept. 13, trainer Charles LoPresti said Tuesday.
