Trainer McCanna gets 2,000th career win

Trainer Tim McCanna notched the 2,000th victory of his career Friday when Whiskey Prince captured the third race at Golden Gate Fields.

Frank Alvarado rated Whiskey Prince ($8.60) in third in the six-furlong race for $12,500 claimers. He made a three-wide move to get the lead in the stretch and won the race by one length over Pazcatch in 1:10.75.

McCanna, a native of Spokane, Wash., settled in Northern California in 2012 after splitting time between Northern California and Washington. He still has a small string of horses at Emerald Downs for Seattle-based owners.

Keith Stucki, trainer of Ancient Title, dies at 96

ARCADIA, Calif. – Keith Stucki, best known for training Hall of Famer Ancient Title, died on Tuesday at his home in nearby Bradbury, Calif., according to Santa Anita’s publicity department, which learned of Stucki’s death through his granddaughter, Shannon Hinkley. Stucki was 96.

 Stucki retired in 1988 following a racing career that including being a jockey and an exercise rider; at one point, he galloped Seabiscuit for trainer Tom Smith.

Albarado fined for failing to make weight

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Veteran jockey Robby Albarado has been fined $500 by the Kentucky stewards for failing to fulfill his mounts last Saturday at Turfway Park in northern Kentucky, where his scheduled mount in the $500,000 Spiral Stakes, Oscar Nominated, wound up winning with replacement rider Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard.

Ogden Mills 'Dinny' Phipps dead at 75

Dinny Phipps was chairman of The Jockey Club for 32 years, the longest tenure of anyone.

Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, the scion of a prominent breeding family and one of the modern architects of the racing industry, died on Wednesday night at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Phipps, who had cancer, was 75.

Parx: Third horse tests positive for equine herpesvirus

A third horse tested positive for the equine herpesvirus at Parx Racing on Wednesday. The soonest a quarantine at the track can now be lifted is May 4.

All three horses to test positive are from Barn 30, where trainers Michael Aro and Ron Dandy are stabled. Salute to Bob, a 3-year-old trained by Dandy who had been racing in the lower maiden-claiming ranks, tested positive for the virus Wednesday after becoming ill.

Elevated white blood cell count keeps Nyquist in barn

Kentucky Derby favorite Nyquist's return to training at Keeneland has been delayed by an elevated white blood cell count.

Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill, said that Nyquist has displayed no outward symptoms of illness, such as an elevated temperature or leaving feed. However, routine blood work showed the elevated cell count. Nyquist shipped to Keeneland Sunday after winning the Florida Derby the previous day. The Kentucky Derby is on May 7.

Shagaf heads cast of eight for Wood Memorial

Shagaf, unbeaten in three starts, is one of just two stakes winners in Saturday's Wood Memorial.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – As Shagaf walked back into the barn following a Wednesday morning gallop at Belmont Park, trainer Chad Brown couldn’t help but gush over the physical appearance the colt made.

“He has the look of a Derby horse,” Brown said.

On Saturday, Shagaf will try to take on the look of a top Kentucky Derby contender when he heads an eight-horse field entered in the Grade 1, $1 million Wood Memorial.

Derby Watch: Baffert, Stevens know how to get it done in Santa Anita Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. – The first time Gary Stevens won the Santa Anita Derby, back in 1988 on the filly Winning Colors, Bob Baffert was in his apartment in Belmont Shore, Calif., watching the race on television, awaiting that night’s Quarter Horse racing at Los Alamitos.

“I remember seeing her win the Santa Anita Derby and thinking, ‘Wow,’ ” Baffert said.

“No one was going to beat her that day,” Stevens said.

In the 28 years since then, when it comes to the Santa Anita Derby, it’s been hard to beat Stevens or Baffert.
