Beverly Lewis Stakes reset for Sunday with five horses

Unbeaten Enola Gray will be a heavy favorite in Sunday's Beverly Lewis Stakes.

A day later than scheduled, the $75,000 Beverly Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies will be run at Los Alamitos on Sunday.

Racing secretary Bob Moreno said on Thursday that the Lewis had five entries. The race was scheduled for Saturday but drew insufficient entries on Wednesday.

The Lewis will be run at six furlongs. The field is led by Enola Gray, who is unbeaten in three starts and will be a heavy favorite. With a small field and a heavy favorite, Moreno said the Lewis will not have show wagering.

Injured rider Beaucamp transferred to Jersey Shore Medical Center

Laurent Beaucamp, who was badly injured in a riding accident in the sixth race at Monmouth Park on Monday, has been moved from the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J., to the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune City.

While the Monmouth Medical Center was able to stabilize Beaucamp, the Jersey Shore Medical Center has a Level 1 trauma wing and is "better equipped to take care of his injuries," according to Nancy Ebersole, a close friend.

Super Derby: Mo Tom 7-5 favorite in seven-horse field

The $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 27 is a long-term possibility for Dalmore.

The Grade 3, $400,000 Super Derby drew seven horses when entries for the 1 1/8-mile race were taken Wednesday at Louisiana Downs. Mo Tom, who will start from post 2, was made the 7-5 morning-line favorite by Louisiana Downs linemaker Russ Ramstad. The second choice at 2-1 is Dalmore.

The Super Derby is scheduled to go as the 11th race on a 13-race program that has a special early post of noon Central. Post time for the Super Derby is 4:55 p.m.

Saratoga: Brown sets meet record for wins while clinching training title

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Chad Brown not only won his first Saratoga trainer’s title, he did it in record-setting fashion.

When Mexican Gold outfinished Off Limits in Sunday’s 10th race, it not only gave Brown a one-two finish in the race but it gave him his 39th victory at the meet, a Saratoga record, with one day remaining. Todd Pletcher held the previous mark of 38, set in 2011. The Saratoga meet expanded from 36 to 40 days in 2010.

That year, Brown finished second in the Saratoga standings, the first of five consecutive years that would happen.

Ruidoso: Valenzuela wins Quarter Horse race

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela won with his first mount since February on Sunday at Ruidoso Downs, where he picked up a Quarter Horse mount in the first race. Valenzuela also was scheduled to ride in a trio of Thoroughbred races later on the card, in the fifth, eighth, and 10th races.

Valenzuela, 53, guided Linda Tee Fire ($6) to a 4 1/2-length win in the 870-yard claiming sprint. The horse is owned by a partnership that includes Mark Allen and Leonard Blach, who raced 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Valenzuela had last ridden at Fair Grounds.

Del Mar: Maldonado injured during training accident

Edwin Maldonado sustained a collapsed lung and broken ribs during a training accident Sunday.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockey Edwin Maldonado sustained a collapsed lung and broken ribs in a training accident at Del Mar on Sunday, according to his agent, Sarah Wolfe.

At midday, Maldonado was undergoing an operation to aid his breathing, Wolfe said.

Maldonado was unseated during a workout shortly after his mount broke from the gate. Observers said Maldonado struck the rail in the accident. He was taken from the track in an ambulance and immediately transferred to a hospital in nearby La Jolla.

Former jockeys Baze, Douglas honored by NTWAB

Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze retired in June.

Russell Baze, the Hall of Fame jockey who announced his retirement this year without any fanfare, has been named the Mr. Fitz Award winner for “typifying the spirit of racing” by the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association, the NTWAB announced on Friday along with the winners of its other annual awards.

Baze, who has won more races than any other jockey in North America, retired in June, capping a career in which the rider dominated the Northern California racing circuit with a “blue-collar work ethic and attention to detail,” the NTWAB said in a release.

Runhappy has second breeze of 2016, zipping five furlongs

Runhappy wins the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in December to cap his Eclipse Award-winning 2015 campaign.

The champion sprinter Runhappy took another step forward in his comeback Thursday at Keeneland, stretching out to work five furlongs in 58 seconds flat.

Keeneland clockers caught the colt, with exercise rider Marcus O’Donnell aboard, going a half in 44 4/5 seconds en route to his five-furlong clocking. He galloped out in 1:11 3/5.

Servis appeals 15-day suspension

Trainer John Servis has been suspended 15 days and fined $3,000 by the Parx Racing board of stewards for three clenbuterol positives this spring. On Wednesday, Servis said he has appealed the penalties.

Servis is the trainer of Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia, who will be a heavy favorite Saturday at Parx in the $150,000 Princess of Sylmar Stakes. He also trained 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones.

Preliminary hearing for embattled Parx groom Vega postponed

A preliminary hearing scheduled on Wednesday for Marian Vega, the Parx-based groom who was arrested two weeks ago and accused of illegally medicating horses trained by Roman Preciado, has been delayed at her counsel’s request, according to the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office.

No makeup date has been scheduled yet, according to a spokesman for the attorney general, Jeffrey Johnson.
