Nyquist, Exaggerator arrive for clash in Pennsylvania Derby

BENSALEM, Pa. - It is no longer a myth that the most accomplished 3-year-olds in the country are running at Parx this weekend as Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Preakness winner Exaggerator arrived here Wednesday afternoon for Saturday’s Grade 2, $1.25 million Pennsylvania Derby.

Those two were joined on a cross-country flight by multiple stakes winner Cupid and a handful of other runners entered to run in a quartet of stakes here on Saturday.

Agencies seek title on Borells' horses

Two Kentucky agencies have joined together in a lawsuit seeking title to 43 horses that were allegedly abandoned by Charles and Maria Borell, the father and daughter who have been indicted on animal cruelty charges related to the alleged abandonment.

Trainer Hunter banned from entering horses at Stronach tracks

Gulfstream Park officials have told Allan Hunter, a trainer linked to the suspended trainer Marcus Vitali, that he has been banned from entering horses at all tracks owned by Gulfstream’s parent company and must remove his horses from Gulfstream’s grounds, track officials said on Wednesday.

Tepin ideally drawn in post 8 for Woodbine Mile

Tepin is the 1-2 favorite among eight starters for Saturday's Woodbine Mile.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The popular champion Tepin drew the outside post 8 and has been pegged as the 1-2 favorite under Julien Leparoux in the 20th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile on Saturday.

Tepin is riding the wave of a seven-race win streak. She beat the boys in last year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile and in her last outing in June, in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Norm Casse, assistant to trainer Mark Casse, said an outside post is ideal for Tepin, but he noted that she has won from the one-hole before.

Hartman settling in for the long run

CYPRESS, Calif. – Trainer Chris Hartman had a rough introduction to Del Mar in late July and early August. The stable lost with its first 14 starters after arriving from Kentucky.

“Our horses needed to acclimate,” he said earlier this month. “I came in a little late.”

The second half of the Del Mar meeting was kinder to Hartman. He won with seven of his final 22 starters and tied for 10th in the trainers’ standings for the meeting, his first in Southern California.

It will not be his last.

Indiana Grand apprentice Don Juan sustains multiple injuries in spill

Apprentice jockey Josue Don Juan was severely injured at Indiana Grand Racecourse when he went over the rail in Wednesday's 10th race, the lone Quarter Horse event on the stakes-filled card.  He was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he has undergone several surgeries. 

Don Juan's mount, Jets Dash N Cash, raced up against the rail and catapulted the rider over the fence. 

According to Chris Belleville, custodian of the jockeys’ room at Indiana Grand, Don Juan sustained multiple breaks to his leg, a finger, and several vertebrae.

Charles Borell likely to have trial date set at Sept. 29 hearing

Charles Borell, a Syracuse, N.Y., resident who was charged this summer by Mercer County, Ky., prosecutors with 43 counts of animal cruelty based on allegations of abandoning horses at a Kentucky farm, is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 29 after a pretrial conference Thursday, according to his attorney.

Mercer County District Court Judge Jeff Dotson is expected to schedule a trial date at the Sept. 29 hearing. Borell’s attorney, Larry Catlett, would not comment on any aspect of the case when reached Friday morning.
