2020 Sovereign Awards: Pink Lloyd, Silent Poet, Artie's Princess top finalists

Pink Lloyd, Silent Poet, and Artie’s Princess are all finalists in two categories in the 2020 Sovereign Award voting for Canadian champions, which is tabulated by The Jockey Club of Canada.

The venerable sprinter Pink Lloyd is a finalist for champion male sprinter and champion older male on the main track, categories that he swept last year. Turf-sprint specialist Silent Poet joins Pink Lloyd in the male sprinter category and also is up for champion male turf honors. Artie’s Princess is a finalist for champion 3-year-old filly and champion female sprinter.

Gamine disqualified from Kentucky Oaks placing, Baffert fined $1,500

Gamine tested over the permitted level for a regulated corticosteroid following her third-place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

Gamine, the champion female sprinter of 2020, has been disqualified from her third-place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on Sept. 4 for a positive of the regulated corticosteroid betamethasone, according to a ruling from Kentucky’s stewards.

Bob Baffert, the filly’s trainer, was also fined $1,500 for the positive. The ruling from the stewards noted that Baffert waived his right to appeal.

Pennsylvania governor's budget plan would drastically reduce purse subsidies

Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania has once again proposed redirecting $200 million in subsidies that are currently flowing to the state’s racing industry to pay for college scholarships as part of his budget plan.

The proposal, which fell flat last year when it was first brought up, is one of a number of controversial elements in the budget plan, which would increase the state tax burden on wealthy individuals and legalize recreational marijuana. The Philadephia Inquirer characterized the budget plan as “dead on arrival” with the state’s Republicans, who control the legislature.

Essential Quality tops 326 nominated to the Triple Crown

Essential Quality wins the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in his last start as a 2-year-old.

Essential Quality, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and champion 2-year-old male of 2020, heads 326 3-year-olds announced Thursday as nominations to this year’s Triple Crown, a list that includes Breeders’ Cup winners Vequist and Fire At Will, too.

Vequist, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies to be named the Eclipse Award winner in her division, is one of 13 fillies nominated to the Triple Crown. Fire At Will won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

John Forbes, key figure in New Jersey racing, dies at 73

John Forbes, a New Jersey-based trainer who amassed more than 2,100 wins in a 40-year training career while playing a critical role in advocating for horsemen’s concerns and his beloved Monmouth Park, died Sunday of complications of cancer, according to friends of the family. Forbes was 73.

50th Eclipse Awards: Authentic named Horse of the Year

Authentic became the fourth horse in the last seven years to win both Horse of the Year and the 3-year-old male title, the highlight of the 50th annual Eclipse Awards, which were announced Thursday night.

Authentic's Kentucky Derby win named NTRA Moment of the Year

Internet voters have selected last year’s win by Authentic in the rescheduled Kentucky Derby as the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s 2020 Moment of the Year, the NTRA announced Thursday.

The Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby victory by Authentic registered 1,363 votes from the 3,403 votes cast on the NTRA website and the social-media website Twitter. The NTRA had posted 11 different events that occurred during the 2020 calendar year as being eligible for the award.

Sharing, Breeders' Cup royalty, retires with injury

Sharing's 2020 season was highlighted by this victory in the Grade 2 Edgewood at Churchill Downs.

Sharing, whose biggest win came in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has been retired from racing. The 4-year-old suffered an injury in her paddock during a spell between racing seasons, co-owner Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners said in a release on Tuesday.

"We had designs on a blockbuster campaign this coming season," Eclipse president Aron Wellman said. "We're devastated we won't be able to enjoy her racing anymore, but she is destined to produce special foals for many years to come."

Santa Anita cancels Friday card due to rainstorm

Santa Anita will not race on Friday in anticipation of a significant rainstorm later this week.

The track announced on Sunday that entries for Friday were delayed from Sunday until Tuesday to allow additional time to assess expected conditions.

The track announced the cancellation of Friday’s program in an early-morning statement on Tuesday. Racing is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, and is expected to consist entirely of races on the main track.
