Stallion rosters clear up before Breeders' Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Likely Classic runner Mindframe will retire to Claiborne Farm in 2026 to enter stud.

As the picture for the Breeders’ Cup began to come into focus with Wednesday’s release of pre-entries, the stallion rosters for 2026 are also becoming clearer.

Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky released its roster of stallions and stud fees for 2026 on Wednesday, and it has an argument for the strongest list of newcomers in the country. Taking up residence in the stud barn following their respective Breeders’ Cup races will be Sierra Leone, Fierceness, and Citizen Bull – all already Breeders’ Cup winners and Eclipse Award champions.

The project is the first Churchill has announced since the company abruptly scuttled three previously announced projects with an estimated total cost of $920 million, citing “increasing uncertainty surrounding construction costs related to tariffs and trade disputes, as well as current macro-economic conditions.”

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Haulin Ice supplemented as Joseph eyes repeat

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Haulin Ice earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint with a victory in the Princess Rooney but still needed to be supplemented for $100,000.

In a bid to win the race for a second consecutive year, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. considered a trio of 4-year-old fillies for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint before landing on a single runner. Getting the Florida-based filly Haulin Ice into the race should have been straightforward for the trainer, but he and the owners only decided to take the trip after a month of intense organizing.

Barbara D. Livingston
White Abarrio, who won the Classic at 1 1/4 miles in 2023, will make his first start at Del Mar in the Dirt Mile.

White Abarrio will be moving to a new distance when he seeks to win a second career Breeders’ Cup race in the Grade 1, $1 million Dirt Mile on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

“He’s already won the Classic,” said trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. “If he could add the Dirt Mile to his résumé, it would be a pretty impressive résumé that puts him in elite company.”

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Precise shows up as likely favorite

Goodwood Racecourse
After winning the Fillies' Mile and Moyglare Stud, Precise looms a formidable favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

She was out of contention, and now she’s back in.

The appearance of Precise in the pre-entries for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Oct. 31 gives the one-mile race a clear favorite.

Precise won the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket Racecourse in Britain on Oct. 10 for her second consecutive win in a Group 1 and fourth straight win overall. In the immediate aftermath of the race, trainer Aidan O’Brien said Precise would be rested for a spring campaign.

O’Brien has changed his mind.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Gate could again be at capacity, with 2024's top two returning

Barbara D. Livingston
Bentornato is currently the Daily Racing Form’s 5-2 morning-line favorite for the Sprint.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The last time a full field of 14 horses went postward in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint was in 2020, when the ageless Whitmore rallied from near the rear of the field to spring an 18-1 upset at Keeneland. From all indications, the starting gate could be at capacity once again for the 2025 edition of the six-furlong Sprint.

Seventeen horses were pre-entered this week. Fourteen have given the race first preference, including Straight No Chaser and Bentornato, the one-two finishers in last year’s renewal of the event.

All are assured spots in the main body of the Turf Sprint field, which is limited to 12 starters.
