Woodbine halts Saturday card amid strong wind

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine canceled its Saturday card after the third race due to strong winds.

The start of the 11-race card was delayed by a half-hour in the hope of diminishing winds as the afternoon progressed, but to no avail.

Saturday’s co-featured 2-year-old stakes, the Shady Well and Clarendon, will be re-carded for Friday and will not be open for new entries.

All other canceled overnight races from Saturday will be offered as carryovers that will be re-opened for new entries and will be given equal preference with races in Condition Book 11.

Maline to retire from Kentucky HBPA after 46 years of service

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Marty Maline, the executive director of the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association since 1976, will retire at the end of the year, the organization announced on Friday.

Maline, 72, started as a part-time employee of the Kentucky HBPA working out of the office of the attorney for the association. After a single day, he was moved to full-time. He has worked under seven presidents of the organization, including Rick Hiles, the current president who was recently elected to his eighth term.

Veterinarian Chan to plead guilty in federal drug case

Alexander Chan, a veterinarian scheduled to go on trial with trainer Jason Servis early next year on drug misbranding and adulteration charges, has entered a change of plea motion in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, according to court documents, indicating that he will plead guilty at a hearing on Monday.

Chan and Servis are the only two people among dozens of individuals related to horse racing who were indicted in 2020 who have yet to plead guilty or go to trial. The trial of Servis remains scheduled to begin Jan. 9.

Shipping banned at Churchill after five horses test positive for equine herpesvirus

Five of the 13 horses that were quarantined Tuesday at a barn on the backside of Churchill Downs have tested positive for equine herpesvirus, a highly contagious disease, leading the track to ban shipments in and out of the property, Churchill said late Wednesday.

The five horses tested positive one day after a horse in the affected barn was removed from the backside after displaying symptoms of equine herpesvirus. That horse later tested positive at a nearby clinic where the horse was receiving treatment.

New hearing officer in Medina Spirit unlikely to re-hear the appeal

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The hearing officer who was appointed to consider an appeal by trainer Bob Baffert and the owner of Medina Spirit has asked attorneys for the connections and the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to file briefs in the case by Dec. 22, according to attorneys in the case.

'All others' favored as Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 closes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 40th or “all others” option, was the 4-5 favorite when Pool 2 of the 2023 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday evening following a four-day betting window.

Forte (10-1), Extra Anejo (13-1), and Loggins (19-1) were the lowest odds among the individually listed betting interests. Combined handle (win and exacta) totaled $162,112.

This is the first year for 40 betting interests in the Future Wager, which previously had been limited to 24 interests since Churchill Downs began offering parimutuel futures in 1999.

Jed Cohen, owner of Red Baron's Barn, dies at 89

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jed Cohen, who died early Sunday after a lengthy illness, was in his sixth decade as a racehorse owner when he experienced an unprecedented level of success in 2017-18.

In California and Kentucky, the family’s Red Baron’s Barn, in partnership with his son Tim’s Rancho Temescal, won 16 stakes with runners such as Itsinthepost, River Boyne, and Sharp Samurai.

“It’s hard for me to believe,” Jed Cohen said in a 2018 interview with Daily Racing Form. “I’ve been at it a long time and I’ve never had this experience.”

Woodbine halts Sunday's racing amid inclement weather

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - After running the first two races, Woodbine canceled the remaining eight races on Sunday’s card due to inclement weather.

The Grade 2 Kennedy Road Stakes has been rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 27. It will be re-carded as is and will not be re-opened for entries. All the other canceled races will be re-offered as carryovers for Friday and will be given equal preference to the condition book.

Racing resumes Thursday with an eight-race card with a 4:50 p.m. post time.

Slammed gets time off, will target 2023 Breeders' Cup

Grade 2 winner Slammed is getting some time off and will resume training next year with a goal of making a return trip to the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Todd Fincher said.

Slammed last raced in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 5 at Keeneland and finished an uncharacteristic 12th after setting a quick, contested pace. Following the race, a foot abscess revealed itself, according to Fincher.

“She had an abscess bust out of her foot,” he said last week. “It was after the race. Obviously, it had been brewing in there.

Former DRF handicapper Litfin dies at age of 64

Dave Litfin was the New York handicapper for Daily Racing Form from 1991-2016.

Dave Litfin, one of the most widely respected Thoroughbred racing handicappers and columnists for more than three decades, died Thursday in Saratoga after a battle with cancer. He was 64.

With an even keel, dry wit, and smart opinion, Liftin was Daily Racing Form’s lead handicapper in New York from 1991-2016. Since then, he wrote handicapping columns for Blood-Horse and worked as a chart caller/handicapper for Equibase, most recently in South Florida.
