Brisset no longer training privately for WinStar

Less than six months after announcing intentions to make its training center a greater focal point in its far-flung racing operations, WinStar Farm is again making a slight change in its operation, with trainer Rudy Brisset re-opening his stable to outside clients.

CYPRESS, Calif. - Faiza is unbeaten in two starts after her gutty win in Saturday’s Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos, a record ninth victory in the race for 2-year-old fillies for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

What would truly make Faiza special is a successful 3-year-old season in 2023.

Baffert won his sixth consecutive running of the $300,000 Starlet with Faiza, who fought off a challenge from Pride of the Nile to win by a head.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Jockey Cristian Torres on Saturday was leading the rider standings in two states – Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Torres won four races at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas on Saturday – including both stakes - to move into a tie atop the standings with Rafael Bejarano.

Torres on Saturday night also led the standings at Remington Park in Oklahoma. He is now based at Oaklawn, but is scheduled to ride the closing night card next Saturday at Remington Park, according to his agent, Cody Autrey. Torres also is scheduled to ride that afternoon at Oaklawn.

Servis pleads guilty, faces up to four years in prison

Under a plea agreement, Jason Servis pled guilty to one felony and one misdemeanor in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Friday.

NEW YORK, NY. - Jason Servis, an East Coast trainer whose horse Maximum Security was voted the champion 3-year-old of 2019, pleaded guilty in a New York courtroom on Friday to resolve charges arising from the government's sweeping investigation of drug misuse in horse racing at U.S. tracks.

Jason Servis expected to plead guilty on Friday

Trainer Jason Servis has enjoyed a strong meet this year at Gulfstream Park.

Jason Servis, one of two high-profile trainers among 27 people charged in a wide-ranging horse doping scandal unveiled in March 2020, will have a change-of-plea hearing Friday before a U.S. District judge in New York where he will presumably plead guilty for his role in the scheme, according to published reports.

The hearing will be held Friday at 11 a.m. before Mary Kay Vysckocil, a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Five finalists named for George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award

Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano is the most accomplished of the finalists for the George Woolf Memorial Award.

Riders based in California, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia are the five finalists for the 2023 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, which will be presented at Santa Anita early next year.

The nominees are Javier Castellano, Daniel Centeno, Terry Houghton, Edwin Maldonado, and Willie Martinez. They have combined to win more than 19,990 races.

The Woolf Award is determined by a nationwide vote of jockeys and is based on career achievement and personal character.

Veterinarian Chan pleads guilty to one count of misbranding or drug adulteration

Alexander Chan, a veterinarian who was indicted in 2020 along with more than two dozen other individuals connected to horse racing, entered a guilty plea to one felony count of conspiracy to commit drug misbranding or adulteration in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Monday, according to court documents.

While speculation has him joining former Red Oak stablemate King for a Day at Irish Hill and Duchess View Stallions in New York, Sacco said they are just one farm in the mix.

Wakanaka scratched from Matriarch Stakes after positive nasal swab

Wakanaka (No. 2) closed fast to win the Fall Harvest Stakes by three-quarters of a length.

Wakanaka, the winner of two stakes in her last three starts, will be scratched from Sunday’s Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar after testing positive for equine herpesvirus in a nasal swab test, the California Horse Racing Board announced in a statement on Saturday.

Wakanaka was one of three horses that arrived at Del Mar from Churchill on Tuesday. Because of a recent outbreak of EHV-1 at Churchill Downs, the horses were quarantined in a separate barn on the Del Mar backstretch.
