Belmont Stakes clocker report: A final summary from both Belmont and Churchill

National Treasure breezes at BEL June 5 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
National Treasure had an unusual work 10 days after his Preakness victory but turned in a strong effort Monday, breezing five furlongs and galloping out seven.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Despite the unexpected glitch of missing a day of training Thursday due to poor air quality in the local area, the serious work had already been done preparing the nine members of this year’s Belmont Stakes field for the main event on Saturday.

With that in mind, it’s time to take one final look at just how those preparations have gone the previous two weeks. The majority of the training took place locally, but this report also includes the Brad Cox-trained trio of Belmont starters, who did all their major work at Churchill Downs.

Woodbine cancels Thursday card due to air-quality concerns

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Due to the Environment Canada’s Special Air Quality Alert for Toronto, and consistent with the recommendations received from veterinarians, medical practitioners, and other racing officials, Woodbine has canceled Thursday’s card with the primary consideration being the health and safety of the horses and racing participants.

Morning works and gate schooling have also been scrapped. Only light training will be permitted on Thursday.

A decision regarding Friday’s card and training for Friday will be made in due course.

Angel of Empire (left) works in blinkers alongside Jace’s Road prior to the Kentucky Derby. The Belmont Stakes will be the first time he wears blinkers during a race.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Technically, Angel of Empire will be getting a change of equipment when trainer Brad Cox adds blinkers for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

However, the blinkers are not totally new to Angel of Empire, who has frequently trained in them throughout his career, but never raced in them.

“I pretty much work everything in blinkers when they’re young,” Cox said.

But when Cox started running Angel of Empire a distance of ground, “I thought I’d just leave them off, let him relax, and it worked out well.”

National Treasure very different from sire Quality Road

Barbara D. Livingston
National Treasure gave his sire Quality Road his first Preakness win and will now look to add a Belmont Stakes victory.

Quality Road sired his first winner of a Triple Crown race when National Treasure, under a savvy ride from John Velazquez, was game on the lead to win the Preakness Stakes. Velazquez was also Quality Road’s regular rider, piloting him to seven career graded stakes wins. Like father, like son?

“Totally different,” Velazquez said.

Trainer Jena Antonucci sent Arcangelo out for an open gallop Tuesday morning. Instead, he took exercise rider Robert Mallari for a ride and worked five furlongs in 1:02.47.

ELMONT, N.Y. - When trainer Jena Antonucci sent Belmont Stakes contender Arcangelo out to train Tuesday morning, she was just looking for an open gallop where the colt would click off furlongs at a rate of approximately 15 seconds over a mile distance.

Arcangelo had a different plan.

Arcangelo, under exercise rider Robert Mallari, put in what Daily Racing Form is calling a five-furlong work in 1:02.47, one in which he got his last three furlongs in 36.75 seconds while continuing out six furlongs in 1:15.25, seven furlongs in 1:27.55, and a mile in 1:40.44.
