Trainer Joseph gets OK to race at NYRA tracks; assigned 23 Saratoga stalls

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. hopes to have a starter in Saturday's Wild Applause Stakes at Belmont.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has been granted permission to race at New York Racing Association tracks and he could have a starter in next Saturday’s $150,000 Wild Applause Stakes at Belmont Park.

Further, Joseph has been granted 23 stalls for the Saratoga meet that begins July 13.

The Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit has issued provisional suspensions to a New York veterinarian and a Pennsylvania-based trainer for violations involving banned substances, the second and third suspensions issued by the agency under new rules that went into effect May 22.

Todd Pletcher, the New York-based Hall of Fame trainer, has been suspended 14 days by the New York State Gaming Commission for an overage of the regulated anti-inflammatory drug phenylbutazone, the second suspension of the trainer handed down by New York regulators in the past month.

Following his emphatic victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, Cody’s Wish will be under strong consideration for the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 5, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday.

Belmont Stakes: Winner Arcangelo may now target Jim Dandy and/or Travers

ELMONT, N.Y. - Arcangelo, the Belmont Stakes winner, will soon ship to Saratoga, where he will train this summer and where he potentially could run in races such as the Jim Dandy on July 29 and/or the Travers on Aug. 26, his connections said Sunday morning.

Trainer Jena Antonucci said she will be in no hurry to decide when to run Arcangelo, who beat champion 2-year-old Forte by 1 1/2 lengths in Saturday’s Belmont, and will let the horse dictate when he’s ready to go.

Handle on 2023 Belmont Stakes increases 12.5 percent

Total handle on the Belmont Stakes on Saturday was up 12.5 percent compared to the depressed wagering totals on the race last year, according to charts of the races.

Total wagering on the race, including all multi-leg bets that ended in the Belmont, was $56.53 million, well above last year’s total handle of $50.25 million. However, last year’s Belmont wagering total was down 16.5 percent compared to the 2021 running, which had total wagering of $60.15 million.

Belmont Stakes: Air quality back to normal; racing, training resume

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Instead of smoke, there were mostly blue skies and a yellow -- not blood orange -- sun high above Belmont Park Friday.

One day after training was canceled here and in Saratoga due to do poor air quality stemming from the Canadian wildfires, the air quality index -- which has now replaced legs as the first thing horsemen check in the morning -- dropped to the moderate level on Long Island, more than acceptable for normal training operations to resume.

By 11:30 a.m., the air quality index here, was in the good range.

New York appeals court throws out Linda Rice suspension

Trainer Linda Rice had been suspended three years for "conduct detrimental to racing.”

A New York state appeals court has ruled that a three-year suspension of trainer Linda Rice handed down by the New York State Gaming Commission is “so disproportionate to the offense and shockingly unfair as to constitute an abuse of discretion as a matter of law” and should be thrown out, according to the ruling.
