“The Lumber Guy” is a nickname given to Oregon lumberman Aaron U. Jones by Barry Schwartz. When Schwartz was looking for a name for a homebred son of Grand Slam, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Boltono, he chose to name the colt after Jones, who had previously owned some horses in partnership with Schwartz.
Wise Dan, who completed his 2012 campaign with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, emerged as the favorite to be named Horse of the Year when finalists for all 17 Eclipse Award divisions were announced on Saturday by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, which co-sponsors the awards along with Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association.

An Eclipse Award finalist at age 2, and again tonight for champion 3-year-old male, Union Rags for two consecutive seasons ranked among the elite of his generation. He was a Grade 1 winner both years, including the Belmont Stakes in 2012.
Glenye Cain Oakford, a Daily Racing Form reporter, has been named the recipient of the Eclipse Award for Audio/Multi-Media Internet, the organizations administering the Eclipse Awards announced on Thursday along with two other winners.
