Allicansayis Wow sizzles in work

ARCADIA, Calf. - Allicansayis Wow has not sprinted in two years, but after a fast workout Sunday at Santa Anita, trainer Patrick Biancone suggests bettors not overlook the longshot filly s chances in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

"Unbelievable," Biancone said, describing the half-mile workout timed by track clockers in a quick 47.20 seconds. "She works like that all the time; she loves this track."

Despite a six-start U.S. campaign around two turns, Biancone said, "I had the Filly Sprint as the target for her since July; I did not want to sprint before then."

Summer Bird appeared to tire slightly in his five-furlong workout.

ARCADIA, Calif. - While most of the racing world turned its Breeders' Cup attention on Saturday morning to Hollywood Park and Zenyatta's final work in preparation for her expected appearance in the Classic, the real action took place at Santa Anita, where nearly two dozen Cup hopefuls breezed, including another leading Classic contender, Summer Bird.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The excitement of Breeders' Cup Week was tempered for the connections of Capt. Candyman Can on Saturday with the news of the sudden death of Dr. Joseph Rauch, a co-owner and breeder of the gelding, who is among the leading contenders for next Saturday's Sprint. Rauch, a director of the urgent care department at Leesburg Regional Hospital near Ocala, Fla., was 66.

Change of plans for Diamondrella

ELMONT, N.Y. Trainers Christophe Clement and Angel Penna Jr. both wanted to work their Breeders' Cup horses on the turf Saturday morning at Belmont Park. Only Clement did.

Penna, not satisfied with the condition of Belmont's Widener Turf Course, opted to work Turf Sprint candidate Diamondrella on the dirt, putting her through a half-mile breeze in 48.22 seconds over Belmont's main track. It was her first work on dirt since July 9.

Turf Sprint: Get Funky getting in

ARCADIA, CAlif. - It looks like the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint will go fairly deep into its bench when entries are taken Tuesday. With several horses opting into other BC races, and one more having to be withdrawn because of a slight injury, the fourth alternate, Get Funky, is poised to make the 14-horse lineup for the 6 1/2-furlong race on Santa Anita's hillside turf course.

Zenyatta passes last Classic test

Zenyatta (right) works six furlongs in 1:12.40 at Hollywood on Saturday under Mike Smith, finishing five lengths ahead of stablemate Green Cat.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - John Shirreffs is not a frivolous man, in words or actions. He comes to the craft of training, the decisions he must make, with great thought and deliberation.

When it came to the possibility of running the unbeaten Zenyatta against males for the first time in this year's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, Shirreffs was not opposed to the idea, but wanted to make sure everything was right. He wanted to see how Zenyatta came out of her final prep race, the Lady's Secret. He wanted to see how she subsequently trained and worked.

Clocker: Godolphin gets its work done early

Barbara D. Livingston
Rainbow View (left), working in company with Achak, tunes up for the Ladies' Classic on Friday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - If I have learned one thing since arriving at Santa Anita earlier this week, or from previous experiences prior to the 2008 Breeders' Cup and this past spring in Louisville before the Kentucky Derby, it's this: If you want to see the Godolphin horses train you had better plan on getting up early. Very early. Having a little night vision would also help.

Devil May Care a two-turn beast

ELMONT, N.Y. - Todd Pletcher watched Devil May Care complete her final workout Friday morning for next Friday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and the trainer had one wish.

"I wish the Juvenile Fillies was a mile and three-quarters," Pletcher said.

Unfortunately for Pletcher, the Juvenile Fillies is only 1 1/16 miles. The good news is it will be run around two turns. The bad news, at least for now, is that it will be run over Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface.
