Conduit, Spanish Moon get feel for the course

Michael Stoute's two highly regarded Turf candidates, Conduit and Spanish Moon, made their first appearances on the Santa Anita turf course Monday morning, along with Stoute's Mile hopeful Zacinto.

Conduit cantered six furlongs under restraint without being asked for much of an effort. He was followed by Spanish Moon and Zacinto. They too cantered under even heavier restraint with Spanish Moon leading his stablemate throughout the move, during which Zacinto was pulling throughout.

Always a Princess works swift five furlongs

Bob Baffert thought he had the competition "over a barrel'' in the 1998 Juvenile Fillies with Silverbulletday. He was pretty confident entering the 2007 Juvenile Fillies with Indian Blessing as well. Five days out from the 26th running of the Juvenile Fillies, Baffert is more hopeful than confident in the chances of Always a Princess in what is shaping up a very competitive race.

Ward confident in Cannonball

Wesley Ward already owes a debt of gratitude to Cannonball. The impetus behind Ward going to Royal Ascot in June was a pair of races for Cannonball, but what ended up happening was Ward being celebrated for a historic breakthrough with two other horses he took there.

"Cannonball was the horse that made it all happen," said Ward, who wound up becoming the first American trainer to win Ascot stakes races when he took the Windsor Castle with Strike the Tiger and the Group 2 Queen Mary with Jealous Again.

Courageous Cat goes quicker than expected

Courageous Cat, a 3-year-old graded stakes winner, delightfully fooled jockey Garrett Gomez during a five-furlong turf workout at Santa Anita on Monday.

Just five days before the Breeders' Cup Mile here, Courageous Cat worked in 1:01, much quicker of a time than Gomez expected, considering the colt was working well off the inside rail, around temporary cones.

"That's a pretty good work around the dogs," Gomez said.

Trainer Bill Mott said he thought that Courageous Cat did as much sightseeing in his first work at Santa Anita as running.

Maker hopeful both his horses make field

Trainer Mike Maker was a little surprised the Breeders' Cup selection panel put Kera's Kitten ahead of Dean's Kitten - he trains both colts - on the preference list. As of Monday, Maker was holding out hope that both could find their way into the field for the $1 million Juvenile Turf.

Kera's Kitten should be in as Eskendereya has seemingly landed in the Juvenile field. The expected defection of Vale of York into the Juvenile field puts Awesome Act into the Juvenile Turf, leaving Deans Kitten needing one more defection to get into the field.

Clocker: Trio of Baffert runners impress

Barbara D. Livingston
Richard's Kid turned in an impressive five-furlong drill in 1:01.11 on Monday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Monday was a perfect morning, from a weather standpoint (sunny, 61 degrees), for working horses at Santa Anita and nearly a perfect morning from trainer Bob Baffert's standpoint after three of his Breeders' Cup contenders turned in impressive-looking workouts, including Sprint favorite Zensational and Juvenile hotshot Lookin at Lucky.

Monday also marked the first local appearance by members of the imposing European contingent, six of whom were released from quarantine in time to stretch their legs near the end of training hours.

Mine That Bird enjoys rejuvenation

Barbara D. Livingston
Mine That Bird, under jockey Joe Talamo, pleased trainer Chip Woolley by working five furlongs in 1:01.49 on Monday morning.

ARCADIA, Calif. - A few weeks in California, and look how well Mine That Bird and Chip Woolley are moving. Mine That Bird, the Kentucky Derby winner, has progressed since running sixth in the Goodwood Stakes last month, and completed his preparation for Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic with a five-furlong work at Santa Anita on Monday morning that had Woolley beaming.

"He really looked smooth," Woolley said.

Juvenile favorites post sharp workouts

ARCADIA, Calf. - While their workouts took place 2,500 miles apart Monday morning on opposite ends of the country, the two favorites for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile elicited similar glowing reviews from their trainers.

Lookin at Lucky worked a half-mile at Santa Anita, after which Bob Baffert confidently stated, "That was good, he's ready." Joe Steiner worked Lookin at Lucky in company behind El Martillo; Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch timed him in 47.35 seconds.

Dirt Mile it is for Bullsbay

Barbara D. Livingston
Bullsbay, Alice Clapham up, trains last week at Santa Anita. He has not raced since running third in the Woodward on Sept. 5.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Had circumstances - and the race surface - been different, trainer Graham Motion would have had no reservations about running Whitney Handicap winner Bullsbay in Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. But with Bullsbay losing a week of training time in early October because of a foot injury and with the Breeders' Cup being run over Santa Anita's synthetic Pro-Ride surface, Motion opted to play it conservative and run in the $1 million Dirt Mile.
