BC Sprint races next targets for Discreetly Mine, Rightly So

While trainer Todd Pletcher was disappointed in Super Saver’s performance in Saturday's Travers at Saratoga, he was naturally thrilled with Discreetly Mine’s 1 1/4-length-victory in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop. Pletcher didn’t want Discreetly Mine to have to go gate to wire, but with the track so favoring speed - all races to that point had been run in front-running fashion - he felt he had no choice.

Awesome Gem takes 4th shot at Pacific Classic

DEL MAR, Calif. – Like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, so too has Awesome Gem returned to Del Mar. Now age 7, Awesome Gem has become something of a fixture here. On Saturday, he will run in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic for the fourth straight year.

He finished second in the race in 2007, and was seventh in both 2008 and 2009, but he comes into this year’s race following a victory in the Hollywood Gold Cup, a performance that ranks as the highlight of his lengthy career.

Debussy has BC Turf on calendar

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The last of the ship-ins for Arlington Million Day on Saturday were to head home Monday from Chicago, including Debussy, winner of the 28th Arlington Million on Saturday for trainer John Gosden.

Debussy and his stablemate Tazeez, third in Saturday’s Million, were to leave Chicago Monday night and arrive back in England on Tuesday. Debussy especially appeared to come out of the race in good order, Gosden said Monday from England, and in all likelihood will return to the U.S. for a try in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Zenyatta won all five of her starts this year, including the Classic with jockey Mike Smith (above). Rachel Alexandra was 8 for 8 this year.

ARCADIA, Calif. - It's all over but the debating.

Zenyatta's victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting has reignited the debate over the 2009 Horse of the Year between her and Rachel Alexandra, who had an equally brilliant year.

Zenyatta, 5, won all five of her starts this year, once against older males, and showed up for the sport's year-end championship event, in which she beat a star-studded field to complete a perfect career.

New Yorkers licking Cup wounds

ELMONT, N.Y. - It was another brutal Breeders' Cup for New York-based horses. One year after winning just 1 of 14 Breeders' Cup races - Maram in the Juvenile Fillies Turf - the New York-based contingent drew a blank in last week's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. Tapitsfly, this year's Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, did race three times in New York, but she spent most of the year in Kentucky with trainer Dale Romans.

Shirreffs shows his wild side

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Even John Shirreffs, so reticent to join celebrations that he purposely avoids getting into the winner's circle after his horses win, got caught up in the moment after Zenyatta rallied to win the on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, culminating a perfect 14-for-14 career.

Shirreffs, as is his custom, watched the race without an entourage. He wandered up the stretch, about a sixteenth of a mile from the finish, and stood in a narrow pathway between the outer rail of the racetrack and the grandstand apron.
