Espoir City gives Japan its best Breeders' Cup shot

There has been little Japanese participation in the Breeders’ Cup over the years, just four starters in all, the last two being Casino Drive, 12th and last in the 2008 Classic at Santa Anita won by Raven's Pass, and Personal Rush, who finished sixth of 13 as a 25-1 shot in the Classic won by Ghostzapper in 2004 at Lone Star Park. But Japan will be well represented this year with a horse who is unquestionably that country’s best runner sent here thus far for the Breeders’ Cup, Espoir City.

Wise Dan emerges from Phoenix into BC Sprint scene

If trainer Charles Lopresti still had even an inkling of a notion of running his Grade 1 winner Here Comes Ben in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint as opposed to his first choice, the Dirt Mile, it ended late last Friday afternoon, immediately after his up-and-coming 3-year-old Wise Dan upset Keeneland’s Grade 3 Phoenix.

“I think we’re going in the Sprint with him,” Lopresti said of Wise Dan on Tuesday. “He came out of that race really good. He didn’t really act like he ran at all. It’s pretty scary. He was awesome.”

Quick Enough earns his way into Turf Sprint picture

A $40,000 claimer in August, Quick Enough has proven good enough in recent starts to go to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 6 following his victory in Monday's $100,000 Morvich Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Quick Enough had an ideal trip in the Grade 3 Morvich over six furlongs on turf, stalking pacesetter Lt. Hopeful to early stretch and outfinishing Dilemma to win by 1 1/2 lengths. The Morvich was part of the Breeders' Cup Win and You're In program, assuring an automatic berth to the winner for the BC Turf Sprint, subject to the payment of entry fees.
