Gio Ponti works on Belmont turf

ELMONT, N.Y. - Gio Ponti worked on the grass Sunday at Belmont Park, but trainer Christophe Clement said that no final decision had been on whether North America’s reigning turf champion will start in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile on grass or the $5 million Classic, a 1 1/4 mile dirt race, both at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Our Minesweeper last to first as longest shot on board

ALBANY, Calif. – Our Minesweeper, a 3-year-old who won his first three starts, including a pair of stakes victories, last year rallied from last to pull off an upset victory in Saturday’s $55,100 Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

Making his first start in five months while meeting older for the first time, Our Minesweeper was the longest shot in the field of six in the six-furlong race and paid $40.20.

He was last early as Summer Excess, the other 3-year-old in the race, and Restless Youth dueled for the lead through an opening 21.64-second quarter.

Big Drama works in strong company

MIAMI – Trainer David Fawkes wanted to push Big Drama a little bit Saturday morning in his next-to-last work for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint. So Fawkes looked down his bench and decided who better to help carry out the assignment than his two-time Grade 2 winner Duke of Mischief, who pushed Big Drama to a six-furlong drill in 1:14.37 over a fast but very dry and cupping-out racetrack at Calder that yielded relatively slow times throughout the morning.

E Z's Gentleman will pass on BC Sprint

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – E Z’s Gentleman, the winner of the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park in July, will miss the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6 after trainer Bob Baffert said on Saturday that he was not pleased with the way the 5-year-old was training.

Saturday, E Z’s Gentleman worked five furlongs in 1:00.80, but failed to keep pace with workmate Gabby’s Golden Gal, who worked six furlongs in 1:12.80.

Proviso tops busy Kentucky worktab

LEXINGTON, Ky. – More than a dozen Breeders’ Cup hopefuls turned in workouts Saturday at Keeneland and at Churchill Downs in Louisville in what figures to be their second-to-last works before they compete in the Nov. 5-6 championships at Churchill.

Proviso, one of the top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, was perhaps the most notable of the Saturday workers. Two weeks from her rousing victory in the Grade 1 First Lady over the Keeneland turf, the Juddmonte Farms mare was back breezing over the same course when going five furlongs in 1:02.40 with the “dogs” up.

Red Desire appears improved since Flower Bowl

ELMONT, N.Y. – Weather and course condition may have compromised Red Desire’s preparation for and performance in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl earlier this month. But if her workout Saturday morning is any indication, the Japanese-bred filly has certainly moved forward from the race and looks poised to make an impact in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

No BC Sprint title defense for Dancing in Silks

Dancing in Silks, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, will not ship to Churchill Downs for another shot at the $2 million race, trainer Carla Gaines said Friday. Owner Ken Kinakin and Gaines made the decision after Dancing in Silks worked six furlongs Thursday at Hollywood Park in 1:13.20.

“He’s not showing any interest,” Gaines said. “I’m not taking him [to Churchill].”

After an outstanding 2009 campaign during which he won 4 of 5, including the BC Sprint, Dancing in Silks has been unable to regain top form in 2010.

Nicole H, Qualia on the bubble for Filly and Mare Sprint

Trainers Mike Hushion and Robert Ribaudo will be holding their breath waiting to find out if their fillies get into the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Pre-entries are due on Monday.

Hushion trains the 3-year-old filly Nicole H, who was ultra-impressive winning a first-level allowance race at Belmont on Sept. 22. Ribaudo trains Qualia, a 4-year-old, who won three allowance races and was beaten a head by probable Filly and Mare Sprint favorite Rightly So in the Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses in the spring.
