LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ronny Werner has trained three horses that started in Breeders’ Cup races, so the fact that he has three more ready to go for the 2010 Breeders’ Cup made this week at Churchill Downs memorable. Werner, it turns out, can count himself lucky to be able to remember the week at all. Or even to have an entire head to house a brain to store memories.

On Sunday morning, Werner was doing a routine leg check on horses in his Churchill barn when a filly named Catnandu, politely described by Werner as “pretty ornery,” kicked her trainer. Hard.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was nearly a year ago, shortly after Blame ended his 2009 campaign with a victory in the Clark Handicap here at Churchill Downs, that trainer Al Stall Jr. mapped out a 2010 schedule with one primary goal, getting to the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a chance to be Horse of the Year.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Zenyatta had a quiet morning at Hollywood Park on Monday, a contrast to the commotion that awaits her presence at Churchill Downs later this week in the build-up to Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The unbeaten 6-year-old mare jogged a leisurely mile on the backstretch training track at Hollywood Park on Monday morning and virtually had the track to herself. She was ridden by regular exercise rider Steve Willard and accompanied by a pony throughout the two-circuit exercise.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Blame, among the favorites for the Classic, topped a group of four Breeder's Cup starters to work before the renovation break at a chilly Churchill Downs on Monday.

Blame, with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard, went an easy half mile in 49.72 seconds before galloping out five-eighths in 1:03.56. He was followed, in order, by Thiskyhasnolimit (Dirt Mile), a half in 48.66; Warrior's Reward (Sprint), four furlongs in 49.02; and Riley Tucker (Sprint), four furlongs in 49.51.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was another busy and somewhat unconventional morning on the Breeders’ Cup watch that included a gate workout from a former Kentucky Derby winner and a four-furlong drill for a Classic hopeful that began at the wire and ended at the half-mile pole instead of the other way around.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Temple City, winner of the Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar in July, will not start in Friday’s $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs, trainer Carla Gaines said Sunday.

Instead, owner B. Wayne Hughes and Gaines have opted to leave Temple City at Hollywood Park for the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup over 1 1/2 miles on Nov. 13.

“He didn’t take to the dirt too well at Hawthorne,” Gaines said. “We can stay here on a course we know he likes.”

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Hibaayeb, winner of the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes in her U.S. debut at Hollywood Park on Oct. 2, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs.

Simon Crisford, racing manager of Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing, confirmed the assignment Sunday. Dettori has ridden the 3-year-old Hibaayeb in five of her 11 starts, including a victory in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 1/2 miles on turf at Royal Ascot in England on June 17.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – By dawn Sunday, Zenyatta had already been out of her stall at trainer John Shirreffs’s stable at Hollywood Park for a 45-minute walk. It was to be the theme of her Sunday, a day after she worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

Zenyatta was scheduled to have three walking sessions Sunday. She was back out for another walk in the 9 o’clock hour on Sunday morning and was to be walked and grazed in the afternoon. The only unknown was how long Shirreffs and his team could delay the start of the afternoon session.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Lookin At Lucky zipped five furlongs in 59.60 seconds at Hollywood Park on Sunday, his final workout before the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
