Breeders' Cup: Regally Ready dominates Turf Sprint

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After Regally Ready won a Churchill Downs turf allowance last fall by nearly eight lengths, Scott Blasi was convinced of one thing. “This one’s the real deal,” said Blasi, the assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen.

On Saturday, with Blasi cheering before the television cameras, Regally Ready proved all that and more by dominating the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill, defeating 13 others as the 2-1 favorite. Country Day, a 33-1 shot, was second, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner and another three-quarters of a length before Perfect Officer.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Amazombie and Smith outduel Force Freeze

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -  Amazombie, the horse nobody wanted, gave trainer Bill Spawr his first Breeders’ Cup victory when he  rallied to a neck victory over Force Freeze in Saturday’s $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs.

Amazombie is owned by Spawr in partnership with Tom Sanford and  gave jockey Mike Smith his 14th Breeders’ Cup win.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf: Irish shipper Wrote scores for O'Brien

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – European turf horses were shut out in two races on the Friday Breeders' Cup program at Churchill Downs, but it didn't take long for them to get on the scoreboard Saturday when Wrote, a 2-year-old Coolmore colt, rolled to victory in the $1 million BC Juvenile Turf, the first grass race of the second day of the 2011 Breeders' Cup.

Breeders' Cup Marathon: Bombs away on Afleet Again at 41-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Afleet Again, the longest shot in the field of 11, made an outside run the final time around the far turn and sustained it through the stretch to post a 41-1 stunner in the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The Marathon was marred by an injury to 3-1 favorite A. U. Miner, who raced far back early and went wrong the final time around the far turn. A. U. Miner was diagnosed with fractured sesamoids in his right foreleg.

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Musical Romance points to Sunshine Millions

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Musical Romance is being pointed to the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Musical Romance came out of her upset victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in good shape and likely will make her next start in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in January, according to the filly’s trainer and co-owner, Bill Kaplan.

Kaplan already is touting Musical Romance as a deserving honoree in year-end Eclipse Award balloting in the filly and mare sprint category, one that could be tightly contested between Musical Romance, Hilda’s Passion, Turbulent Descent, and Sassy Image.

Breeders' Cup: Stacelita sold, headed to Japan

Stacelita was scheduled to be examined at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Stacelita, who finished 10th as the 9-5 favorite in Friday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, has been sold to Terry Yoshida and will be retired to become a broodmare in Japan, trainer Chad Brown said Saturday morning.

Brown said Stacelita came out of the race, in which she was beaten 5 1/2 lengths, with a two-inch gash on the outside of her left foreleg, but Brown didn't think that affected her performance in the race.

Breeders' Cup: Announce's connections say scratch was right call

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The stewards' decision Friday to scratch Announce from the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf on the advice of the track veterinarian was the correct one, according to Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for the filly's owner-breeder, Juddmonte Farms.

Breeders' Cup: My Miss Aurelia to winter in California

My Miss Aurelia will winter with trainer Steve Asmussen's West Coast string of horses.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  After dominating the East Coast during her 2-year-old season, My Miss Aurelia is headed west to prepare her for 3-year-old campaign.

The morning after My Miss Aurelia completed a perfect season by winning Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by three lengths at Churchill Downs, trainer Steve Asmussen said the filly would spend the winter at Santa Anita. Asmussen trains My Miss Aurelia for the partnership of Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton, who both are based out west.

Secret Circle, Shumoos heading to California after Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint

Secret Circle and Shumoos, the 1-2 finishers in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint, will have winter campaigns in California.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The top two finishers from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint, victorious Secret Circle and runner-up Shumoos, are California bound for the winter.

Although Secret Circle is no stranger there, Shumoos is, having made all of her starts prior to the Juvenile Sprint in Britain.

The lone filly to run in the Juvenile Sprint, she has now joined the stable of Southern California-based trainer Ben Cecil. She had been trained by Brian Meehan.

“It’s nice to pick up ones like that, that’s for sure,” Cecil said Saturday.
